The earlier alert warning of the presence of Lakurawa militants in Girkau community, Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State, has tragically materialised into a devastating attack that has left at least four people dead, including a police officer, and several others traumatised. The assault, which occurred on Monday, August 3, 2026, saw the heavily armed militants unleash a wave of terror on the rural community, killing a police officer, an elderly man, a young herder, and a farmer, while also burning vehicles, rustling cattle, and attempting to sexually assault a married woman.
According to local sources, the militants killed Police Officer Hussaini Manyu, who was stationed in the area. They also murdered an elderly man identified as Bala Wakili and shot a young herder who refused to surrender his cattle. In addition, a farmer was shot on his farm. The attackers also set ablaze a Police Hilux vehicle and a Community Guard Hilux, and rustled an unspecified number of cattle. In a particularly harrowing incident, the militants reportedly beat a married woman after she resisted an attempted sexual assault.
The attack followed an urgent alert raised on Monday by security analyst and conflict monitor Bakatsine, who reported that the militants had entered the community, leaving residents in fear. Despite the warning, the attackers were able to operate with impunity, killing and destroying property without immediate intervention from security forces. The attack is the latest in a series of deadly incidents carried out by the Lakurawa group, which has been linked to cattle rustling, raids, and killings across parts of Sokoto and Kebbi states in recent months. The group, which has transitioned from a locally tolerated armed presence into a coercive militant actor, operates primarily in Sokoto and Kebbi states along the Nigeria–Niger border.
The assault on Girkau comes just days after the group massacred at least 12 people, including six who were burnt alive, in Lajinge village in Sabon Birni Local Government Area over the weekend of August 1-2, 2026. In that attack, the assailants operated for several hours without any security intervention, further underscoring the growing threat posed by the group. The Lakurawa militants have been responsible for a series of violent incidents, including cattle rustling, attacks on villages, and the imposition of illegal taxes on local populations. The group is composed of Sahelian jihadists, armed herders, and local actors, and has been linked to a series of deadly attacks across the region.
The attack on Girkau has once again highlighted the inability of security forces to protect vulnerable communities in Nigeria's North-West, where the overlapping presence of profit-driven bandits and ideological militants has paralyzed rural areas. Villages across the state have been deserted at night, and residents have repeatedly called on the government to take decisive action to protect them. The failure of security forces to respond to the Lajinge attack, where the assailants operated freely for hours, has further eroded public confidence in the government's ability to provide security.
The victims of the Girkau attack were not just statistics. They were fathers, sons, husbands and neighbours whose lives were torn apart in broad daylight. The killing of Police Officer Hussaini Manyu, the murder of elderly Bala Wakili, the shooting of a young herder and a farmer, and the brutal assault on a married woman are a stark reminder of the human cost of the security crisis in Nigeria's North-West.
