A fresh wave of terror swept through Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State on the night of Monday, August 3, 2026, when suspected bandits launched coordinated attacks on the neighbouring communities of Wusono and Burkawa, killing a resident, injuring at least four others, and sending dozens of families fleeing into the darkness. The assailants, who operated for several hours with impunity, opened fire on residents, rustled cattle, looted cash and valuables, and forced many families to abandon their homes, according to multiple local sources who spoke to journalists on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.
The attack on Burkawa community claimed the life of a resident identified as Alhaji Tijjani, who was reportedly shot dead by the gunmen during the assault. Two other residents sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment. In the neighbouring Wusono community, two additional residents were also injured in the attack, bringing the total number of wounded to four. The assailants, who arrived in large numbers and were heavily armed, also rustled an unspecified number of cattle and looted cash and other valuables from homes before retreating into the surrounding bush. As of the time of this report, the Kaduna State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the incident, and the identities of the injured victims had not been disclosed.

In Igabi LGA, the situation has been particularly dire, with bandits exploiting the vast forests and rugged terrain to launch attacks on vulnerable communities. The attacks have also disrupted farming activities, as many farmers have been unable to access their farmlands due to the threat of violence. The Kaduna State Government, under Governor Uba Sani, has repeatedly condemned the attacks and pledged to strengthen security in the affected areas. In a recent statement, the governor directed security agencies to intensify operations to apprehend the perpetrators and restore peace to the region.
However, residents of Wusono and Burkawa have expressed frustration over what they describe as the government's inability to provide adequate security. They have called on the state and federal governments to deploy more security personnel to the area and to take decisive action to end the cycle of violence. As one resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told journalists: "We are living in fear. Every night, we go to bed not knowing if we will wake up alive. The government must do something before more people are killed." The latest attack has once again highlighted the urgent need for a comprehensive security strategy to address the root causes of banditry in Kaduna State and the broader North-West region, where armed groups have continued to terrorise rural communities despite ongoing military operations.
