The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that it is investigating the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, AIG Moshood Jimoh, following corruption allegations raised by social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM). In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, disclosed that the senior police officer has been summoned for questioning as part of an internal administrative review, while the criminal case connected to the allegations is already before a competent court. The Force also confirmed that VeryDarkMan has been formally invited to appear before investigators to provide evidence in support of the allegations he has made publicly.
The controversy stems from the police investigation into the killing of youth leader Sheriff Salami in April 2023 and the killing of Ademola Akinloye, the son of an Ajiran traditional ruler, in August 2024. Following the investigation, Hammed Akanbi, a Lagos-based businessman, was declared wanted, arrested by INTERPOL in Benin Republic in April 2026, and repatriated to Nigeria to face prosecution. VeryDarkMan has publicly challenged the investigation, alleging that Akanbi was wrongly implicated and that investigators manipulated evidence to portray him as the mastermind of the killings. The activist has also accused AIG Jimoh, who was the Commissioner of Police in Lagos at the time of the incidents, of corruption, bias, abuse of office, and conniving with some persons to frame Akanbi for murder because of a land tussle. VeryDarkMan further claimed that suspects arrested in January 2026 initially confessed to involvement in the Salami murder without implicating Akanbi, alleging that subsequent statements linking the businessman to the crime were obtained under pressure or torture.
In its statement, the Force emphasised that the criminal matter referenced in the public commentary has been investigated and is now before a court of competent jurisdiction, following the advice of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The police stressed that the matter is sub judice, and its adjudication rests solely with the judiciary. "The Force will not try this case in the media, nor will it allow its outcome to be shaped by public campaigns or commentary seeking to prejudge the officers or parties involved," the statement read. The Force further confirmed that the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja has formally invited AIG Moshood Jimoh for questioning in connection with the allegations raised by the activist. Additionally, on July 30, 2026, the FCID issued a letter of invitation to VeryDarkMan, requesting him to appear at its Abuja office to substantiate the claims he has made in the public domain.
While acknowledging the constitutional right of every Nigerian to freedom of expression and to demand accountability from public institutions, the Force warned that freedom of expression does not extend to defamation or the amplification of unsubstantiated allegations as a means of compelling disciplinary outcomes outside due process. The police stated that any officer found culpable following investigation will face sanctions in accordance with the law, and where allegations are established to be false and calculated to damage the reputation of an officer or the institution, the Force reserves the right to pursue appropriate legal remedies. The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has personally waded into the matter, assuring that justice and due process will be followed. The Force has urged VeryDarkMan to honour the invitation extended by the FCID, engage with the ongoing administrative review in good faith, and allow the judicial process governing the separate criminal matter to run its course.
The police statement stressed that grievances against officers are best resolved through established complaint and oversight mechanisms rather than through public campaigns designed to force disciplinary outcomes. The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed that it remains an institution founded on law, discipline, and accountability, and that no officer is above the law, nor will any genuine complaint be ignored. The AIG in charge of Zone 2, Moshood Jimoh, has been invited for questioning, while VeryDarkMan has been asked to substantiate his allegations. As the investigation proceeds, both the judicial and administrative processes are expected to run their course, with the Force reiterating its commitment to transparency, due process, and the rule of law.
