Human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, Omoyele Sowore, has launched a blistering attack on President Bola Tinubu, describing him as "nothing but a global scam" and questioning his educational qualifications while demanding that the trial judge in his ongoing cybercrime case recuse himself over alleged bias. Sowore made the remarks in a video posted on his X account on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, shortly after proceedings in his ongoing criminal trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where he is being prosecuted by the Department of State Services (DSS) over social media posts in which he referred to President Tinubu as a "criminal."
Speaking to journalists and supporters outside the courtroom, Sowore alleged that the prosecution was attempting to prematurely close his defence despite the court registry's failure to provide his legal team with crucial documents needed for cross-examination. He accused the prosecutor, whom he described as a "persecutor," of seeking to foreclose his case as part of a broader strategy to deny him a fair hearing. "They want to foreclose the case. They even foreclosed over 30 lawyers by asking them to kneel down in court," Sowore claimed.
The AAC presidential candidate further alleged that individuals had informed him that an agreement had been reached with the presiding judge to send him to prison. "They still told me today that they have agreed with the judge to send me to prison. Yes, I was told. That was the reason why the judge sent me to prison just because I missed one court appearance," he alleged. He contrasted his case with high-profile corruption trials that have lingered in court for years without conclusion, questioning why his case was being expedited while cases involving billions of naira in alleged corruption remained unresolved. Sowore also criticised the judge for allegedly refusing to proceed on judicial vacation while continuing to hear his case, and called on the judge to recuse himself, declaring, "Everything don cast. Let the judge just remove his hand and stop threatening me."
Turning to politics, Sowore referenced the recently released list of presidential candidates for the 2027 general elections, noting that his AAC was among the parties fielding candidates. He then launched a fresh attack on President Tinubu's educational credentials, questioning his fitness to seek re-election and reviving longstanding controversies surrounding his academic records. Sowore insisted that Tinubu had not attended primary or secondary school and had only presented one academic document—a certificate from Chicago State University—which he claimed was different from the document Tinubu had presented in previous elections. "The presidential candidate of the APC did not go to primary school. He did not go to secondary school. He only presented one paper," Sowore said. He further alleged inconsistencies in Tinubu's academic documents, noting that the certificate presented from Chicago State University differed from records previously submitted during his earlier elections. "He only presented one paper from Chicago State University, which was different from the paper he presented in 1999, which was from the University of Chicago. Now, he has downgraded it to Chicago State University," he said.
Sowore suggested that instead of seeking the presidency, Tinubu should take advantage of adult education and return to primary and secondary school. "It's not too late to take advantage of adult education. Let him go back to primary school, secondary school, online. He should go back to school and let serious people contest," he said. President Tinubu has repeatedly maintained that he possesses the educational qualifications required under Nigeria's Constitution to contest for public office, despite the absence of primary and secondary school qualifications on the summary page of his Form EC9 submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The controversy over Tinubu's academic records has been a recurring issue in Nigerian politics, with opposition figures and civil society groups questioning the authenticity of his credentials. Sowore's latest remarks come amid heightened political tensions ahead of the 2027 general elections, as the opposition seeks to challenge the President's re-election bid on multiple fronts, including his educational qualifications and his administration's handling of the economy and security.
