Troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have dealt a significant blow to bandit networks in Sokoto State, intercepting a large herd of rustled livestock and recovering three motorcycles during an intelligence-led ambush in Shagari Local Government Area. The operation, which took place on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, followed a distress call indicating that suspected terrorists were moving stolen animals through the area, according to a military statement published on Wednesday, August 5.
Acting on the intelligence, troops laid an ambush at a known crossing point in Horo Birni village, a community that has suffered repeated attacks in recent months. When the suspects appeared with the livestock, the troops engaged them, forcing the bandits to abandon the animals and flee into the surrounding bush. A follow-up sweep of the area led to the recovery of 147 livestock, comprising 101 cows, 44 sheep, and two camels. The troops also recovered three motorcycles believed to have been used by the bandits for mobility during the operation.
The recovered livestock were subsequently handed over to their rightful owners, bringing relief to families whose livelihoods depend on cattle rearing and farming. The military said the success of the operation was made possible by effective synergy among security agencies and timely intelligence provided by residents. The troops remain battle-ready to tackle all forms of criminality in the country but need sustained community support and vigilance, a security source said.
The operation is part of ongoing offensives by the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, which has recorded several successes against banditry and kidnapping in Sokoto, Zamfara, and other parts of the region in recent weeks. The recovery of the livestock and motorcycles represents a significant blow to the logistical capabilities of criminal networks that have long terrorised rural communities across the North-West. For the families whose animals were returned, the operation is a rare moment of justice in a region where cattle rustling has become a daily threat to survival.
