A total of N7.2 billion was released to CCECC Nigeria Limited in December 2025 for the ongoing construction of the Kano Northern Bypass Road, a project that has now dragged on for more than five years, according to a tracking update published by the public accountability platform Tracka on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. The disclosure has renewed scrutiny over the pace of work on the 37.8-kilometre dual carriageway, which is being built to decongest Kano metropolis and improve regional connectivity.
The Tracka update, which focused on the Ungogo Local Government Area axis and its intersection with BUK Road and Gwarzo Road, observed that clearing has been done and drainage construction is ongoing. However, the platform called on the Federal Ministry of Works to hasten the construction process, noting that the project has been ongoing for over five years. The Kano Northern Bypass, a dual carriageway featuring 10 major bridges, reinforced concrete shoulders, and a three-metre-wide concrete median, is designed to divert traffic away from Kano city and boost economic activities across the North-West region.
The project, being executed by CCECC Nigeria Limited, has been a key component of the Federal Government's infrastructure agenda under President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Projects. In January 2026, the Minister of Works' representative inspected the project, noting that the bypass would significantly decongest traffic within Kano metropolis, improve the transportation system, and facilitate the easy movement of agricultural produce from rural areas to urban markets. At the time, progress was recorded in site clearance, topsoil removal, earthworks, pavement layers, and structural works. However, more than five years after the project commenced, Tracka's latest update suggests that significant work remains to be done.
The N7.2 billion payment to CCECC in December 2025 represents a major disbursement for the project, which has been funded through successive federal budgets. The contractor has been commended for deploying modern equipment and maintaining high construction standards, but stakeholders have expressed concern over the slow pace of work. Tracka, a civic technology platform that tracks public projects and budgets, has urged the Federal Ministry of Works to accelerate the construction process to ensure timely completion and delivery of the benefits promised to the people of Kano State.
The Kano Northern Bypass is part of a broader infrastructure push in the North-West, which has seen the Federal Government award contracts for several road projects under the Renewed Hope Agenda. The bypass is expected to reduce travel time, improve road safety, lower vehicle maintenance costs, and stimulate economic activities across the region. However, with the project already stretching beyond its initial timeline, residents and stakeholders are calling for greater urgency to ensure that the road is completed and begins to serve its intended purpose. As Tracka noted, the clearing and drainage work are positive signs, but the pace of construction must be accelerated to bring the project to fruition.
