The presidential candidate of the Accord Party and its factional National Chairman, Professor Christopher Imumolen, has officially withdrawn from the 2027 presidential race and declared his full support for the re-election bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Imumolen announced the decision in a statement issued on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, in Abuja, describing the move as a deliberate and patriotic sacrifice made in the interest of national unity, stability, and long-term development.
Imumolen explained that the decision followed extensive consultations with the leadership of the Accord Party and political stakeholders across the country. He stressed that the choice to step down from the race was not driven by personal interest but by a deep conviction that the unity, stability, and continued progress of Nigeria must take precedence over personal political ambition. "Following my emergence as the presidential candidate of the Accord Party during the duly conducted presidential primaries, I, in consultation with the leadership of the party, made the patriotic decision to withdraw from the presidential race and fully support the re-election of President Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election," Imumolen stated. He added: "This decision was not borne out of personal interest, but from a deep conviction that the unity, stability, and continued progress of Nigeria must take precedence over personal political ambition."
In his statement, Imumolen outlined ten reasons for endorsing Tinubu's re-election, highlighting what he described as a shared vision with the President on economic transformation, education, youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, industrialisation, and national development. He praised Tinubu's leadership capacity, political sagacity, and commitment to progressive governance, describing the President as a resilient leader with the ability to navigate Nigeria's complex political and economic landscape. The Accord Party chairman expressed confidence that the Tinubu administration's economic policies and fiscal reforms would eventually deliver sustainable growth, despite current economic difficulties. He argued that continuity in governance and policy consistency would strengthen investor confidence, create jobs, and consolidate ongoing reforms. Imumolen also described President Tinubu as a bridge between Nigeria's older generation of political leaders and the emerging generation of transformational leaders, noting that his willingness to engage and collaborate with progressive-minded Nigerians across political parties reflected true statesmanship. He expressed hope that history would remember those who placed the country's development above personal ambition.
The Accord Party has been embroiled in a leadership crisis, with Imumolen leading a faction of the party.
