Panic and confusion have gripped the residents of Abugi, a historic community in Kupa South, Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State, following an attack by armed individuals, with eyewitnesses reporting sporadic gunfire and residents fleeing for safety. The attack, which occurred on Thursday, August 6, 2026, has thrown the community into disarray, heightening fears among residents who have appealed for immediate security intervention.
According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers, believed to be armed Fulani militias, invaded the community and began shooting sporadically, forcing residents to abandon their homes and businesses. The security situation remains tense, with many families still in hiding as of the time of this report. As of the time of filing, no official statement had been issued by the Kogi State Police Command, the Nigerian Army, or the Kogi State Government regarding the incident, leaving residents and the public in the dark about the scale of the attack and whether any casualties had been recorded.
The Abugi community has a history of similar attacks, with previous incidents linked to reprisal violence between local communities and Fulani herders. In September 2025, about five persons were killed and properties worth millions of naira were razed when Fulani herdsmen allegedly attacked the community in what was believed to be a reprisal for an earlier incident. In a separate incident in the same period, gunmen attacked a police outpost at Abugi, killing two police officers. The recurring nature of the attacks has left residents living in constant fear and has raised questions about the effectiveness of security measures in the area.
The attack comes barely three days after suspected armed herders attacked Abaushwa community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, killing four residents and injuring several others. It also follows a pattern of escalating violence in Nigeria's North-Central region, where farmer-herder conflicts and banditry have continued to claim lives and displace communities despite repeated government interventions.
As of the time of this report, no casualty figures had been confirmed, and it remains unclear whether the attackers have withdrawn from the community or whether the siege is ongoing. Residents have appealed to the Kogi State Government and security agencies to deploy troops to the area to restore order and prevent further attacks. The Kogi State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the incident at the time of filing this report, and efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer for the state were unsuccessful.
