Imo State Governor and Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Campaign Council for the Osun governorship election, Hope Uzodimma, has delivered a sharp and dismissive response to Afrobeats superstar Davido, telling the singer to stop directing political appeals at him and instead focus on helping his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, prepare for life after office ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election. The exchange, which has added a fresh layer of drama to the already tense political atmosphere in Osun State, began when Davido, who heads the youth mobilisation team for his uncle's re-election campaign, appealed to an unnamed politician from Imo State to allow the people of Osun to freely choose their next governor without external interference.
Speaking at a campaign event in Osogbo on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, the Grammy-nominated singer said he had heard rumours that a politician from Imo State planned to use the Osun election as a political battleground to prove a point. Although Davido did not mention Uzodimma by name, he urged the individual to promote peace and allow the electorate to decide the outcome of the poll. "I have heard rumours that someone from Imo State wants to use this election to prove a point," Davido said. "Please, let the people of Osun decide. Let the election be free and fair." The singer, who is married to Chioma Rowland, an indigene of Imo State, also invoked his connection to the state in his appeal, a move that Uzodimma would later describe as "pedestrian."
Reacting through a statement issued on Wednesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Electronic and Creative Media, Ambrose Nwaogwugwu, Uzodimma dismissed Davido's comments as misplaced and accused the singer of overstepping his bounds. "It is rather pedestrian for Davido to direct such an appeal to the Chairman of the Progressive Governors' Forum simply because his wife is from Imo State," the statement read. "Instead, his appeal should be directed to the people of Osun State, who will ultimately decide the election's outcome through their votes." The governor reiterated his commitment to a peaceful and credible electoral process, insisting that the APC would continue to campaign for its governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, by appealing directly to voters across the state.
Uzodimma also seized the opportunity to launch a blistering attack on Governor Adeleke's administration, alleging that the Osun governor had failed woefully in the discharge of his responsibilities. "The reality is that Governor Ademola Adeleke has, in the opinion of many, failed woefully in the discharge of his responsibilities. This is why many Osun voters are determined to vote him out in the August 15, 2026 governorship election," Uzodimma said. He claimed that feedback from different parts of the state indicated that a significant number of voters had rejected the current administration and were prepared to embrace a new direction under the APC.
In his most pointed remark, Uzodimma advised Davido to channel his energy into supporting his uncle after his expected defeat rather than making emotional appeals to politicians. "Rather than attempting to influence Governor Hope Uzodimma through emotional appeals, Davido should concentrate on helping his uncle prepare for life after office," the statement read. "Perhaps, Davido should also begin making preparations to officially sign his uncle as a dancer in his musical band because, judging by the mood of the electorate, he may well be out of a political job after the August 15, 2026, governorship election."
The war of words between the two political heavyweights has further heightened tensions in Osun State, where the ruling Accord Party and the opposition APC have traded accusations of violence, intimidation, and electoral manipulation ahead of the crucial off-cycle governorship election.
