A pre-dawn tragedy struck the Dan Dishe area of Kwanar Yashi in Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State on Saturday, August 8, 2026, when a residential building measuring approximately 20 by 30 feet collapsed, killing three children and trapping 16 others beneath the rubble. The Kano State Fire Service confirmed that the incident occurred at about 4:32 a.m., when the Service's Emergency Response Unit received a distress call from one of its staff members, Aminu Sani Warure, reporting the collapse.
Upon receiving the report, firefighters from the Service headquarters were immediately mobilised to the scene. On arrival, the rescue team discovered that a residential building had completely given way. The Service confirmed that 19 people were affected in total, comprising 16 victims who were rescued alive and three others who were rescued unconscious. Those rescued alive were identified as Al-Mustapha Yusuf, 15; Khadija Yusuf, 7; Ummusalama Yusuf, 10; Madina Yusuf, 6; Hafsat Yusuf, 9; and 11 other persons whose identities were not immediately ascertained.
However, the three children rescued unconscious tragically did not survive. The Kano State Fire Service later confirmed that Affan Yusuf, 5; Hassana Yusuf, 7; and nine-month-old Ummulkursum Yusuf were pronounced dead. The Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Yusuf Abdullahi, confirmed the tragedy in a statement, listing the three deceased and providing details of the survivors. According to the Service, all the victims, both survivors and the deceased, were handed over to Usman Ibrahim, identified as the brother of their father, for further necessary attention.
The cause of the building collapse remains under investigation. However, the Kano State Fire Service has urged members of the public to observe all necessary safety precautions, particularly during the rainy season, to prevent similar incidents. The Service also called for increased vigilance and community responsibility to safeguard lives and property. Sani Anas, the Fire Service Director, assured residents of the Service's continued readiness to respond promptly to emergencies across the state.
The collapse of the residential building in Fagge LGA adds to a troubling pattern of structural failures across Nigeria, particularly during the rainy season when weakened foundations and poor construction practices often prove fatal. The loss of three young children from the same family, including a nine-month-old infant, has sent shockwaves through the community and reignited calls for stricter enforcement of building codes and regulations. As the investigation continues, the people of Dan Dishe and the wider Kano community are left to mourn the dead and pray for the full recovery of the survivors, even as they demand answers about how such a tragedy could have been prevented.
