The Sokoto State Police Command has arrested several youths in connection with the alleged gang rape and subsequent death of a 27-year-old woman, identified as Fatima Bizo, in Yarume village, Wamakko Local Government Area. The incident, which occurred in the community, has reportedly generated deep concern among residents following allegations that Bizo was sexually assaulted before she died. According to reports from the area, the suspects allegedly subjected the woman to sexual assault and subsequently used a rope to restrain and strangle her to death. The deceased has since been buried in accordance with Islamic rites.
Confirming the incident on August 8, 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Sokoto State Command, DSP Ahmad Rufai, said the suspects had been arrested and were currently being detained at the Criminal Investigation Department of the command. Rufai stated that the suspects were undergoing investigation and that the police would establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and take appropriate action based on the outcome of the investigation. The police spokesman urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information while investigations continue. However, the precise circumstances surrounding Bizo's death have not been conclusively established, as the police investigation is still ongoing. The allegation that she was strangled remains part of the account being investigated by authorities.
The development has heightened calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the girl's death and for anyone found culpable to face the full weight of the law. Residents have called for the circumstances surrounding the woman's death to be thoroughly established. The case has renewed concerns over sexual and gender-based violence and prompted calls for a comprehensive investigation and prosecution of anyone found responsible. Authorities are expected to establish whether the allegations of sexual assault and strangulation occurred as reported, identify the specific individuals responsible, and determine the appropriate charges based on the evidence gathered. For now, the arrested youths remain suspects and have not been convicted of any offence; their culpability can only be established by a competent court after due process. The police investigation is therefore expected to determine the full circumstances leading to Fatima Bizo's death and provide further clarity on the case.
The tragedy in Yarume village is a grim reminder of the pervasive violence against women that continues to plague communities across Nigeria, particularly in the North-West. Reports of sexual assault and gender-based violence have become alarmingly frequent, with women and girls often bearing the brunt of insecurity and lawlessness. In recent months, Sokoto State has witnessed a series of attacks, including the abduction of women and children by armed groups, as well as other cases of gang rape. The state's security challenges have created an environment where such crimes can occur with impunity, leaving communities traumatised and demanding justice. The police response in this case, while swift, will be judged by the thoroughness of the investigation and the outcome of any prosecution.
For the family and community of Fatima Bizo, the pain of her loss is compounded by the brutality of the circumstances surrounding her death. The use of a rope to strangle her after the alleged assault speaks to a level of violence that is difficult to comprehend. As the investigation continues, there is hope that the perpetrators will be brought to justice and that this case will serve as a catalyst for broader action to address the scourge of sexual violence in Nigeria. The police have urged calm, but the anger and grief in Yarume village are palpable. The coming days will be critical in determining whether this case becomes another statistic or a turning point in the fight against gender-based violence in the region.
