Nigerian troops have dealt a significant blow to terrorist networks in Zamfara State, foiling a planned bombing plot and intercepting a logistics supply chain that was allegedly being used to finance deadly attacks across the North-West region. In a series of coordinated operations conducted on Friday, August 7, 2026, troops of the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, neutralised an improvised explosive device planted along a major road, engaged fleeing terrorists in multiple firefights, and arrested two suspected collaborators, recovering over N5.3 million in cash intended for terrorist operations. The military's successes, announced in a statement on Saturday by the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, underscore the persistent and evolving threat of terrorism in the region, even as security forces intensify their campaigns.
The most urgent operation unfolded near Jabanda village in Zurmi Local Government Area, where troops of Sector 2, alongside a Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, responded to intelligence reports of a suspected IED planted along a busy thoroughfare. The team successfully located and safely detonated the device, swept the road, and declared it safe before reopening it to motorists. But the danger did not end there. As the troops were returning from the mission, they encountered terrorists at Birnin Tsaba village in Birnin Magaji Local Government Area. A fierce exchange of fire ensued, forcing the terrorists to retreat into the bush. A subsequent search of the area yielded two motorcycles, a camouflage jungle hat, a handheld radio, and other items.
In a separate operation in Shinkafi Local Government Area, troops working with the Mobile Police Squadron acted on credible intelligence about terrorist activity around Kwanar Jolof. Engaging the terrorists with superior firepower, the troops forced them to withdraw in disarray. A follow-up search of the area led to the recovery of a motorcycle, two camouflage uniforms, a camouflage vest, and a jungle hat. These operations, while significant in their own right, were overshadowed by the interception of a suspected terrorist logistics network that could have funded a major attack.
The most significant breakthrough came when troops on patrol near Maradun intercepted a 35-year-old suspected terrorist collaborator and logistics supplier identified as Lawali Dan Alo. According to Lieutenant Colonel Danja, the suspect was carrying a bag which he claimed contained food items. However, a thorough search of the bag revealed over N5.302 million in cash and a mobile phone. Preliminary interrogation indicated that Dan Alo was allegedly delivering the funds on behalf of a terrorist leader to another individual, Kasimu Garba, who was subsequently arrested at his residence. Both suspects are currently in custody and undergoing further investigation.
The recovery of such a large sum of cash highlights the sophisticated financial networks that sustain terrorist operations in the region. The funds, allegedly intended to finance attacks and procure weapons, represent a critical lifeline for terrorist groups that have terrorised communities across Zamfara and neighbouring states. By intercepting this logistics supply chain, the troops have not only disrupted a potential attack but have also dealt a significant blow to the terrorists' ability to sustain their operations.
The Theatre Command has commended the troops for their vigilance, courage, and prompt response, noting that aggressive patrols, intelligence-led operations, and targeted actions against terrorist networks would continue across the North-West region. The Command also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and provide timely and credible information to security agencies to help restore lasting peace in the region. The successful operations in Zamfara demonstrate the military's commitment to dismantling terrorist networks and protecting civilians from the scourge of violence that has plagued the North-West for years.
