Troops of Sector 1, Joint Task Force Operation WHIRL STROKE, in collaboration with personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, have successfully foiled an attack by suspected armed herders on Azege Village, Tombo Council Ward, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State. The operation, which took place on Monday, August 10, 2026, resulted in the neutralisation of one armed herder and the recovery of a cache of weapons, including an AK-47 rifle. The military said the swift response by the troops prevented what could have been a devastating attack on the community, underscoring the importance of rapid coordination between security agencies in confronting threats to vulnerable populations.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, by the Acting Media Information Officer of Operation WHIRL STROKE, Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, the troops received a distress call on August 10 reporting an attack on Azege Community. The troops immediately mobilised to the area to confront the threat and restore security. Upon arrival, the troops made contact with the armed criminals and engaged them in a fierce gunfight. The assailants, overwhelmed by the troops' superior firepower, fled in disarray, abandoning their mission to terrorise the community.
The troops pursued the fleeing attackers and subsequently discovered one armed herder who had been neutralised during the encounter. A search of the scene led to the recovery of one AK-47 rifle, one magazine loaded with 16 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and one Nokia mobile phone. Lieutenant Zubairu confirmed that the recovered items had been secured, while the remains of the neutralised assailant were evacuated by the police. Efforts are ongoing to track and apprehend other members of the group who fled the scene.
The Joint Task Force commended the troops for their tactical resilience and praised the Nigeria Police Force for its effective cooperation during the operation. The task force also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements and activities within their communities to security agencies. The successful operation demonstrated the importance of rapid response and inter-agency collaboration in confronting attacks on vulnerable communities.
The incident in Logo Local Government Area highlights the persistent security challenges facing parts of Benue State, where attacks involving armed groups have remained a major concern for communities and security agencies. Benue State has been a flashpoint for farmer-herder conflicts for years, with recurring attacks often leading to loss of lives, displacement, and destruction of property. The involvement of armed herders armed with sophisticated weapons like AK-47 rifles has exacerbated the insecurity, making it increasingly difficult for local communities to defend themselves.
The recovery of the AK-47 rifle and ammunition from the scene is a significant blow to the criminal network operating in the area. It also demonstrates the effectiveness of intelligence-led operations by the military and police in disrupting attacks before they can cause widespread harm. The troops' ability to swiftly respond to the distress call and neutralise one of the attackers sends a strong message that security forces will not tolerate attacks on peaceful communities.
The operation has been hailed by residents of Azege Village and surrounding communities, who have lived in fear of attacks by armed herders for years. Many have expressed relief that the troops were able to prevent what could have been a deadly assault. The military has reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and has urged residents to continue providing timely information to security agencies to assist in ongoing operations.
As the hunt for the fleeing attackers continues, the troops have maintained a presence in the area to prevent any further incursions. The successful operation in Azege Village is a testament to the bravery and professionalism of the troops and serves as a reminder that the fight against insecurity in Benue State is far from over. But for one community, at least, the sound of gunfire was met with the response of soldiers determined to keep them safe.
