The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two suspected drug dealers and recovered illicit substances valued at N6.2 million, alongside N598,400 in cash, following an early morning raid on a suspected criminal hideout in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area. The operation, carried out on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Awkuzu, was based on credible intelligence regarding the activities of suspected drug dealers in the area.
The suspects were identified as 47-year-old Nzube Onyedikachukwu, alias “Onyeoma,” and 20-year-old Ugochukwu Azia. A search of the hideout led to the recovery of large quantities of substances suspected to be Cannabis sativa, methamphetamine and other illicit drugs, with a street value of N6.2 million. The sum of N598,400 in cash was also recovered from the scene.
The Police Public Relations Officer for the Anambra State Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the development in a statement, noting that the raid was part of the command's intensified operations against criminal elements and their hideouts. Preliminary investigations indicated that the suspects were allegedly involved in the distribution of illicit drugs, while the location was reportedly used as a gathering point for criminal elements after carrying out their operations. Some other suspected criminals reportedly fled the scene upon sighting the police.
The Commissioner of Police for Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, said the operation was in furtherance of the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on sustained intelligence-led operations and the dismantling of criminal hideouts across the country. The commissioner reiterated that the command would sustain intelligence-led raids, targeted operations and proactive policing aimed at dismantling criminal hideouts and denying criminals safe havens within the state. He also urged residents, traditional institutions, community leaders and other stakeholders to continue supporting the police with credible and timely information on suspicious persons, criminal activities and identified criminal hideouts.
The two suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue to establish the source and distribution network of the suspected illicit drugs, identify other persons connected to the operation, and ascertain the circumstances surrounding the recovered cash. The Anambra State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling drug-related crimes and other criminal activities across the state.
