The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 32‑year‑old man, Ogunmola Oluwasola, and recovered a cut‑to‑size pistol and four rounds of live ammunition during a stop‑and‑search operation along the Owo‑Ute Road, in a development that underscores the state's growing vigilance against armed crime. The arrest, which took place at about 5 a.m. on Friday, August 7, 2026, was carried out by operatives of the Anti‑Kidnapping Squad, who were conducting routine patrols and stop‑and‑search duties along the route when they intercepted the suspect for a search.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday, August 11, by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the operatives discovered one cut‑to‑size pistol and four rounds of live ammunition in the suspect's possession during the search. Oluwasola, a resident of Idasen Street in Owo, was immediately taken into custody, while the firearm and ammunition were secured as exhibits. Detectives have since obtained the suspect's statement and are intensifying investigations to determine the source of the weapon, its intended use, and whether he has any links to armed robbery, kidnapping, or other criminal activities in Owo and its environs.
The Commissioner of Police for Ondo State, CP Felix Ohagwu, commended the operatives for their vigilance and commitment to proactive policing, reiterating the command's determination to sustain intelligence‑led patrols, stop‑and‑search operations, and other security measures across the state, particularly along major highways and identified crime‑prone areas. Ohagwu also issued a stern warning to criminals and individuals involved in the illegal possession or trafficking of firearms, stressing that the police and other security agencies would continue to pursue them relentlessly.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue, with the command seeking to establish his possible links to other criminal activities and identify any accomplices. The Ondo State Police Command has also urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information that could assist security agencies in preventing crime and protecting lives and property across the state.
The recovery of the cut‑to‑size pistol and live ammunition is a significant achievement in the command's ongoing efforts to combat violent crime and ensure the safety of residents in Owo and surrounding communities. The stop‑and‑search operation along the Owo‑Ute Road is part of a broader security strategy aimed at intercepting criminals and preventing the movement of illegal firearms through the state. The police command has assured members of the public that it remains committed to protecting lives and property and will continue to deploy intelligence, visibility patrols, and community‑based policing strategies towards maintaining peace and security across Ondo State.
As the investigation progresses, the police are working to uncover the full extent of Oluwasola's involvement in criminal activities and to bring all persons found culpable to justice. The arrest serves as a reminder of the importance of proactive policing and community cooperation in the fight against crime, and the Ondo State Police Command has reiterated its call for residents to continue providing useful information to security agencies.
