The Headquarters Theatre Command of the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, has launched a massive coordinated offensive across the region, code‑named Operation CLEAN SWEEP IV, designed to intensify pressure on terrorist and armed criminal networks, disrupt their supply lines, and prevent the infiltration of extremist elements from the Sahel into Nigerian communities. The operation, which commenced on August 12, 2026, brings simultaneous ground and air actions to bear on identified threats across Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kebbi states, marking one of the most comprehensive military campaigns in the region since the establishment of Operation FANSAN YAMMA.
According to a statement issued on Thursday, August 13, by the Media Information Officer of the Theatre Command, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, CLEAN SWEEP IV is a deliberate, multi‑pronged offensive aimed at degrading the operational capabilities of terrorist groups, disrupting their movements and logistics, and denying them the opportunity to establish footholds within Nigerian communities. “The operation is designed to intensify pressure on terrorist and armed criminal elements, disrupt their networks and prevent infiltration and expansion of terrorist activities across the North West,” Danja said. “The launch of Operation Clean Sweep IV has already translated into intensified operational activities across the Theatre.”
In Katsina State, troops of Sector 2 launched a clearance operation on Wednesday, August 12, around suspected terrorist enclaves in Dutsinma Local Government Area. The ground assault mounted significant pressure on the terrorists, compelling them to abandon their positions and withdraw into surrounding bushes. According to Danja, the clearance operation is still ongoing in the general area, with troops maintaining the momentum to prevent the fleeing terrorists from regrouping or re‑establishing their positions. The operation in Dutsinma is part of a broader effort to clear terrorist strongholds and secure communities that have long been vulnerable to attacks and extortion.
In Zamfara State, the Air Component of Operation FANSAN YAMMA conducted precision strikes following credible intelligence on the movement and convergence of terrorists on motorcycles in Anka Local Government Area. The air assets struck the terrorist concentrations with devastating effect, neutralising scores of fighters and forcing survivors to abandon their motorcycles and flee into the surrounding bushes. The air component subsequently acquired and engaged the fleeing terrorists, further disrupting their formations. The precision strikes in Anka underscore the increasing integration of intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance assets and air power in the military’s campaign against terrorist and criminal networks across the North‑West.
A major component of Operation CLEAN SWEEP IV is the deliberate effort to contain and dismantle the Lakurawa terrorist network across the theatre. The Lakurawa group, which emerged in northwestern Nigeria between 2016 and 2018, is said to have deeper Sahelian roots in the Mali–Niger border region. It began as a community self‑defence force assisting local communities facing cattle rustling and bandit attacks, but it has since transformed, establishing camps, recruiting young people, imposing its own interpretation of Islamic law, taxing communities and engaging in violence. Operation CLEAN SWEEP IV is designed to prevent the infiltration and reinforcement of Lakurawa elements into Nigeria while denying the group the opportunity to exploit border areas as corridors for movement, logistics and the establishment of enclaves.
The operation further targets terrorist activities around the River Niger axis and the Kainji Lake National Park, preventing the area from being used as a platform for projecting violence into adjoining communities and other parts of the North‑West. By closing these strategic corridors, the military aims to cut off terrorist groups from the supply lines and safe havens that have allowed them to sustain operations across the region. The focus on the River Niger and Kainji Lake reflects the Theatre Command’s determination to confront terrorist networks before they can expand their operational footprint and exploit the vast, rugged terrain for movement and logistics.
Lieutenant Colonel Danja emphasised that the launch of Operation CLEAN SWEEP IV underscores the proactive and sustained posture of Operation FANSAN YAMMA in confronting evolving terrorist threats across the region. “The Theatre remains resolute in protecting civilian communities, securing Nigeria’s territorial integrity and denying terrorist elements the opportunity to regroup, reinforce or establish operational footholds,” he said.
The offensive comes barely a week after troops of Sector 2 arrested two suspected members of the Lakurawa terrorist group in Zamfara State, both nationals of Niger Republic, and rescued 18 abducted persons in a separate operation. On August 7, troops arrested four suspected Lakurawa collaborators in Sokoto State and recovered rustled cattle. These successes have set the stage for the larger, more sustained pressure now being applied under CLEAN SWEEP IV.
The military’s strategy places emphasis on denying terrorists the space required to regroup and build new operational bases. Rather than waiting for terrorist formations to consolidate, the Theatre Command has adopted a proactive approach, striking at terrorist concentrations, hideouts, movement corridors and logistics networks before they can launch attacks on civilian populations. The integration of ground forces, air assets and intelligence has proven effective in disrupting terrorist operations and forcing fighters to flee their established positions.
For the communities of the North‑West, the launch of Operation CLEAN SWEEP IV offers a glimmer of hope that the relentless cycle of banditry, kidnapping and terror may finally be broken. For the troops and air crews on the front lines, it is another day of risking their lives to protect civilians and secure the nation’s territorial integrity.
