Troops of the Joint Task Force South East, Operation UDO KA, have delivered a significant blow to the operational capacity of the Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network, dismantling identified strongholds and recovering a cache of weapons and materials used for manufacturing improvised explosive devices in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State. The operation, conducted at dawn on Saturday, August 22, 2026, involved a coordinated effort by the military's maritime component, the Department of State Services and the Anambra Vigilante Group, reflecting an intensified inter-agency approach to tackling the security challenges that have plagued the South-East region for years. The joint team launched a targeted offensive on identified strongholds at Obene Village and Abator Village, which lie within the Ochuche and Umunankwo communities, areas that had reportedly become safe havens for elements of the proscribed group.
Upon sighting the advancing troops, the suspected IPOB/ESN fighters opened fire in a desperate attempt to repel the assault before abandoning their positions and fleeing into the surrounding terrain. The troops responded with superior firepower and immediately pursued the fleeing elements through the dense bush and waterways characteristic of the Ogbaru area. During the pursuit, the troops neutralised one of the terrorists, while other fleeing members managed to escape with the corpse of another neutralised colleague. Blood stains observed along the withdrawal route indicated that some of the terrorists sustained gunshot wounds during the encounter, suggesting that the toll on the group may have been higher than officially confirmed.
The coordinated assault effectively dislodged the group from its strongholds, denying its members the freedom to operate or use the locations as bases for further attacks against security forces and innocent civilians. Following the operation, troops consolidated their positions and intensified the exploitation of surrounding areas to track fleeing members of the group and prevent their regrouping elsewhere. A thorough exploitation of the abandoned strongholds led to the recovery of two pump-action guns, two motorcycles, IED-making materials and other sundry items. The seizure of the explosive-making materials represents a significant operational gain, as it further degrades the terrorists' capacity to fabricate explosive devices for attacks against security forces, critical infrastructure and innocent civilians.
The operation in Ogbaru is the latest in a series of sustained military offensives under Operation UDO KA, which has been ongoing for several months with the stated objective of restoring peace and stability to the South-East. In recent weeks, troops have intensified their operations, targeting suspected IPOB/ESN camps, dismantling illegal checkpoints and recovering arms and ammunition. The military has consistently maintained that the South-East, once regarded as the country's commercial and industrial heartland, has been destabilised by the activities of IPOB/ESN, which have included attacks on security personnel, burning of police stations, and the imposition of sit-at-home orders that have crippled economic activities. The government has repeatedly dismissed IPOB's separatist agitation, insisting that Nigeria's unity is non-negotiable.
IPOB, a separatist group seeking an independent state of Biafra, has been proscribed in Nigeria since 2017 and designated as a terrorist organisation. The group's armed wing, ESN, has been blamed for a series of violent attacks in the region, including the killing of security personnel and the destruction of public property. Despite the government's crackdown, the group has maintained a significant underground presence, often operating from remote communities and forests across Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states. Ogbaru, a riverine area in Anambra State, has been particularly challenging for security forces due to its difficult terrain and proximity to waterways that provide escape routes for fleeing fighters. The successful operation on Saturday demonstrates the military's growing ability to project force into these challenging environments and disrupt the group's activities.
The recovery of IED-making materials is particularly significant, as it suggests that IPOB/ESN elements were actively preparing for more sophisticated attacks against security forces and civilian targets. The use of IEDs has been a hallmark of the insurgency in the South-East, with explosive devices frequently planted on roads and highways, targeting military convoys and police patrols. The seizure of these materials will hamper the group's ability to manufacture explosive devices, at least in the short term, and potentially save lives.
