Troops of the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have intercepted three disassembled canoes reportedly procured by notorious terrorist kingpin Shehu Bagewaye to facilitate the movement of his fighters across riverine areas in Zamfara State, dealing a significant blow to the terrorist's logistical network. The interception, which took place on Sunday, August 23, 2026, followed credible intelligence that the canoes had been procured from Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State and were being transported to Zamfara. The canoes were intended to help the terrorists overcome river obstacles restricting their movement and enhance their mobility for criminal activities against vulnerable communities.
Acting on the intelligence, troops of Sector 2 conducted a covert operation along identified routes and intercepted the three disassembled canoes while they were being transported to their intended destination. The individuals conveying the items reportedly abandoned them and fled after sighting the troops. The Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, confirming that the recovered canoes are currently in military custody while efforts are ongoing to track those connected with the attempted movement.
The interception is the latest in a series of intelligence-led operations under Operation FANSAN YAMMA, which is the military's ongoing campaign against banditry, terrorism and other criminal activities in the North West region. Just days before this operation, troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA had intercepted a suspected arms and explosives courier carrying 180 units of 20mm Super Power explosives in Zamfara State.
