A teacher and farmer with the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board, Mohammed Abubakar Ndakpada, has remained in the custody of his abductors since July 30, 2026, after his family reportedly paid N12 million in ransom, only for the kidnappers to demand an additional N5 million before releasing him. Ndakpada, a resident of the Lata-Nna community in Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State, was abducted by suspected bandits while returning from his farm on Thursday afternoon between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.. According to the family, after prolonged negotiations, they raised and paid the N12 million and also supplied food, drinks and other requested items to the kidnappers. However, despite fulfilling these demands, the abductors refused to release the teacher and have now demanded an additional N5 million.
A family member, who appealed for government intervention, said the prolonged captivity has left them deeply worried and financially distressed. "My uncle that bandits kidnapped since last month is still with them after the family paid the ransom of N12 million with some items. Now they are requesting an additional N5 million. Please help us plead with the government for us," the family source said. The family has appealed to the Kwara State Government and the Federal Government to urgently intervene and take all necessary steps to secure Ndakpada's safe release. They have also called on security agencies to intensify efforts to locate the kidnappers and rescue the teacher without further delay.
Initial reports indicated that the kidnappers had demanded as much as N100 million and later N50 million before the amount was reduced following negotiations. The abduction is part of continuing security concerns in parts of Patigi Local Government Area and other communities in Kwara State. The development has also raised concerns over the safety of the abducted teacher, particularly following earlier threats reportedly issued by the kidnappers. As of the latest reports, there has been no publicly available confirmation from the Kwara State Government or security agencies independently confirming the ransom payment or the additional demand. Ndakpada's family, however, continues to plead for his safe return, while efforts to secure his release are reportedly ongoing.
The incident has renewed calls for stronger security measures and more effective strategies to tackle kidnapping networks operating across parts of Nigeria. Residents have urged security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the teacher and bring the perpetrators to justice, stressing that innocent citizens should not be left at the mercy of criminal elements. Ndakpada's family expressed concern that continued negotiations and ransom payments could further expose them to additional demands from the kidnappers. As the teacher remains in captivity, the family is urging the Kwara State Government, the Federal Government, and relevant security agencies to treat Ndakpada's case as urgent and do everything within their power to secure his safe and immediate release.
