Tragedy struck the Kutigi–Bida Road in Niger State on Sunday, August 23, 2026, when a head-on collision between a Toyota Sienna and a Mazda vehicle claimed the lives of seven travellers and left seven others injured. The crash occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. near Shebe Village, a few kilometres from Kutigi town, when the Mazda, which was travelling from Minna towards Mokwa, reportedly entered a blind corner and collided with the oncoming Sienna that was travelling from Lagos to Minna. The Mazda had departed the Mobil Motor Park in Minna and was carrying eight passengers, while the Sienna was also fully occupied. Seven of the occupants of the Mazda died at the scene, while a teenage girl, the only survivor in the vehicle, was unconscious as of the time of this report.
The Niger State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Corps Commander Aishat Sa'adu, confirmed the incident, stating that 18 people were involved in the crash. According to the FRSC, seven people lost their lives, seven others sustained injuries of varying degrees, while four escaped without injuries. Sa'adu confirmed that the injured victims were evacuated to Kutigi General Hospital for medical attention, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at the hospital's mortuary. She said, "As at the time of rescue, 18 people were involved, seven injured, seven killed and four not injured". The FRSC official did not immediately disclose the identities of the victims or provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as devastating. A Facebook user, Mc Kolo Kutigi Ba'agi, who posted images of the incident, said the collision occurred between Lanle and Shabe Woro villages. Residents told Daily Trust that the accident involved a Mazda with passengers travelling from Minna to Mokwa and a Sienna bus coming to Minna from Lagos. Isah Ndako, a resident, told Daily Trust that it was a head-on collision between Lanle community and Shabe-Kota on the Bida-Kutigi road. The Mazda car reportedly entered a blind corner and collided with the Sienna, with nine fatalities reported from the Mazda car. Authorities are also trying to locate the relatives of the teenage survivor of the crash. The incident has once again highlighted the dangers faced by motorists and passengers using the Bida-Kutigi road, particularly when travelling between major communities. Authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the crash and establish the circumstances that led to the fatal collision.
