The Edo State Police Command has arrested a 21-year-old man, Innocent Emmanuel, for the alleged defilement of an eight-year-old girl in the new Etete axis of Benin City, a case that has reignited public outrage over the rising tide of sexual violence against minors in Nigeria's South-South region. The command's spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the arrest on Monday, August 24, 2026, stating that the suspect was taken into custody following a formal report concerning the alleged sexual assault of the minor. According to the police, the suspect allegedly committed the offence while the child's parents were away from home, taking advantage of her vulnerability in a quiet residential neighbourhood.
The victim, whose identity has been withheld to protect her privacy, was reportedly subjected to repeated sexual harassment by the same suspect prior to the latest incident, according to the complaint filed by her family. The child has since been taken to a hospital for medical examination and is receiving the necessary care. The police spokesperson said the suspect has been detained and that investigation is ongoing, with a view to charging him to court upon its conclusion.
The arrest comes amid growing concerns over the prevalence of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in Edo State, where authorities have recorded a troubling number of defilement cases in recent months. Between January and July 2026, the Edo State Government recorded over 70 cases of defilement, with more than 50 per cent of such cases perpetrated by fathers of the minors. The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, had earlier raised the alarm over the high cases of SGBV across the state, revealing that in the last two months alone, the command had arrested over 23 suspects linked to rape, defilement and other SGBV-related offences.
The latest incident has drawn condemnation from child rights advocates, who have called for stricter enforcement of laws protecting minors and for the judiciary to hand down deterrent sentences to convicted offenders. The police have assured the public that the suspect will face the full weight of the law, and have urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. As the investigation continues, the case serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of children in communities across Nigeria and the urgent need for collective action to protect them from predators who prey on their innocence.
