The Lagos State Government has announced the temporary closure of the Oke-Afa Bridge in Isolo for three weeks, starting Friday, August 28, 2026, to allow for critical rehabilitation works on the structure. The announcement was made on Monday, August 24, 2026, by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, who also unveiled a detailed traffic management plan aimed at minimising disruptions for motorists and residents during the repair period. The rehabilitation, which is being handled by the Federal Ministry of Works through the Office of the Federal Controller, Lagos, in conjunction with Messrs. Strabic Construction Limited, will run until Friday, September 18, 2026.
The Lagos State Government stated that the rehabilitation will be executed in two phases to manage vehicular movement around the busy axis effectively. The first phase will cover the outbound Isolo-to-Ejigbo section of the bridge, running from Friday, August 28, 2026, to Friday, September 11, 2026. The second phase will focus on the inbound Ejigbo-to-Isolo section, starting on Saturday, September 12, 2026, and ending on Friday, September 18, 2026.
In a statement, Commissioner Osiyemi explained that the Oke-Afa Bridge will be temporarily closed to vehicular movement during the rehabilitation, and motorists are required to use designated diversions. During the first phase, motorists travelling from Isolo towards Ejigbo will be diverted onto the Isolo-bound carriageway from Pako Roundabout. Traffic will move in both directions along this carriageway before rejoining the main carriageway at Mobil Filling Station. Motorists coming from Ejigbo will maintain free movement and share the carriageway with Ejigbo-bound traffic from Mobil Filling Station to Pako Roundabout, after which they will regain full access to the road.
During the second phase, from September 12 to 18, motorists travelling from Ejigbo towards Isolo will be diverted onto the Ejigbo-bound carriageway from Mobil Filling Station, with traffic moving in both directions before rejoining the main carriageway at Pako Roundabout. Motorists coming from Isolo will maintain free movement and share the carriageway with Isolo-bound traffic from Pako Roundabout to Mobil Filling Station, after which they will regain full access to the road.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will deploy personnel to the area to coordinate vehicular movement and minimise congestion throughout the rehabilitation period. An emergency tow vehicle will also be stationed within the axis to provide quick recovery operations for breakdowns throughout the works. Osiyemi urged motorists to be patient and cooperate with traffic officials, noting that the partial road closure forms part of the traffic management plan for the rehabilitation works on Oke-Afa Bridge.
The Oke-Afa Bridge is a critical infrastructure connecting Isolo, Cele, Jakande Gate, Isheri, Ijegun and several other communities in the Oshodi-Isolo and Egbe Local Government Areas. Its rehabilitation has been a subject of concern for residents and motorists, who had previously raised alarms over its deteriorating condition. The closure is expected to cause significant traffic disruptions in the area, but the government has assured that the phased approach and the deployment of LASTMA officials will help to ease the flow of traffic. Motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and use alternative routes where possible.
