The All Progressives Congress has officially announced the reopening of its electronic membership registration exercise nationwide, setting Monday, August 31, 2026, as the start date for the exercise that will see both existing members required to validate their membership and new members encouraged to join the party.
The party's National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, made the announcement in a statement issued on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, directing that the exercise be conducted in all wards across the country. Morka said the party was taking the step ahead of the 2027 general elections and invited all party stakeholders, supporters and members, old and new, to participate in the registration process.
The APC said the exercise was designed to digitise the party's membership register, ensure the integrity of membership records, enhance access to membership data for planning and management decisions, promote internal democracy, and strengthen the party's commitment to democratic innovation in Nigeria. Eligible registrants, according to the party, must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid National Identification Number.
The exercise has been framed by the party as a strategic move to prepare for the 2027 elections, with the party emphasising the need for a credible and up-to-date membership database. The APC also noted that it was using the opportunity to deepen its internal democratic processes by encouraging the participation of old and new members in the registration exercise.
While the party has projected the reopening as a move toward strengthening its internal structures, critics have raised questions about the timing of the exercise and the party's motives. Some political observers have pointed out that the APC had previously conducted a similar registration exercise in 2024, and the sudden re-launch just months to the 2027 elections has fueled speculation about the party's strategy.
The Electronic Registration Exercise will be conducted in all wards nationwide, with the party urging all eligible Nigerians to participate.
