The Zamfara State Police Command has recorded a significant victory against banditry, rescuing two abducted victims and neutralising one suspected bandit during a fierce gun battle in Talata Mafara Local Government Area. The joint operation, which took place at about 2:30 p.m. on Monday, August 24, 2026, involved Police Tactical Operatives, members of the Community Protection Guard (CPG), and the Civilian Joint Task Force, according to a statement issued by the command on August 25, 2026.
The operation unfolded around Tashar Lawali Village in Kagara District when the security team intercepted a group of armed bandits who were moving with some of their captives. The criminals, who were riding on five motorcycles, opened fire immediately upon sighting the approaching security personnel. The operatives responded with superior firepower, engaging the attackers in a fierce exchange that forced the bandits to retreat into the surrounding area.
During the encounter, one suspected bandit was neutralised, and an AK-47 rifle along with its magazine was recovered from the scene. Two abducted victims were successfully rescued, while other members of the gang reportedly escaped with gunshot injuries. The police confirmed that none of the security personnel involved in the operation was injured or killed.
The Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, CP A.M. Bello, PSC+, MNIPS, commended the personnel for their bravery and swift response. He assured residents that the command would continue to rely on intelligence-led and coordinated operations to disrupt criminal networks and strengthen security across the state. The police said the operation is still ongoing as operatives intensify efforts to track the fleeing suspects, rescue any remaining captives, and recover additional weapons. The successful operation underscores the commitment of security forces to restoring lasting peace and protecting communities from banditry and other criminal activities in Zamfara State.
