The Kano State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with a fatal shooting at a wedding ceremony in the Tudun Yola Quarters of Kano metropolis, where a 34-year-old man, Rabiu Mukhtar, allegedly opened fire on guests, killing one person and leaving three others injured. The tragic incident occurred on August 16, 2026, at a marriage ceremony, popularly known as a "DJ" event. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna-Kiyawa, the suspect used a pump-action gun to shoot four people, who were rushed to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano.
The victims have been identified as Sadiq Abubakar, Umar Rabiu, Muhammad Sadisu, and Aliyu Mustapha. One of the victims, Aliyu Mustapha, later died in the hospital, while the remaining three are responding to treatment. The police confirmed that Mukhtar and another person were apprehended and taken into custody at the Command Headquarters, Bompai, Kano. A pump-action gun was recovered from the suspect.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident was triggered by a dispute over loud music. The suspect reportedly told the police that the organisers of the musical event did not consult residents before holding the celebration, and the loud music disturbed him, preventing him from sleeping. However, in a twist to his defence, Mukhtar also claimed that he opened fire after hearing that thugs, known as 'Yan daba,' were coming to the venue.
The Kano State Police Command condemned the attack and reiterated the need for residents to seek lawful means of resolving disputes rather than resorting to violence. The two suspects are currently being detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Kano State Police Command as the investigation continues, and they will be prosecuted after the investigation is completed.
