Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has accused the Federal Government of turning the fight against terrorism into a costly industry, saying those in power are profiting while citizens remain in danger. In an interview with News Central Television on Thursday, August 27, 2026, Ezekwesili said trillions of naira have been spent on security, but Nigerians are still being kidnapped and killed.
"Fighting terrorism is now an industry from which people who have the levers of power, starting from the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces to the military establishment, are benefiting," she said.
She challenged the government to account for the money. "They need to be telling Nigerians what the performance is from the kind of trillions of naira that has been allegedly used to fight insecurity in the country," she said. "The results point to the fact of poor governance".
Ezekwesili linked the security crisis directly to poor leadership and a lack of accountability. She warned that treating the lives of citizens lightly sends a dangerous signal to the country's enemies.
When asked about the debate over state police, she said the problem is not the structure but the quality of governance. "If the country had good governance, clarity of mandates would be observed," she said. She argued that any security system will fail without clear responsibilities and strong oversight.
Ezekwesili's comments come as Nigeria continues to grapple with widespread insecurity, including mass kidnappings, banditry, and terrorist attacks. Her accusation that the anti-terror fight has become a "costly industry" echoes a growing frustration among Nigerians who see little improvement despite huge military spending.
