Troops of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) have arrested two suspected herders following an alleged attack on residents harvesting crops in Sabon Layi village, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State. The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Monday, August 24, 2026, according to security analyst Zagazola Makama, who shared details of the operation on Wednesday.
According to sources, troops deployed in Sabon Layi under Operation Hard Knock responded to a distress call reporting an attack allegedly carried out by Fulani herders. Upon arriving at the scene, the soldiers found an elderly woman who had sustained injuries during the assault. The troops arrested two suspects linked to the attack, while other members of the group reportedly fled the area. The injured woman was evacuated to the Missionary Hospital in Sabon Layi for medical treatment.
The two suspects were later handed over to the Keystone Mangu Divisional Police Command for further investigation and possible prosecution. Security agencies have maintained a presence in the community, with ongoing operations aimed at stabilizing the area and preventing further escalation of violence.
Plateau State has experienced recurring tensions between farming communities and pastoralists, often resulting in loss of life and displacement. The latest arrest underscores the continued reliance on kinetic military operations alongside police investigations to address rural insecurity in the North Central region. The police command has yet to issue a formal statement on the charges pending against the suspects.
