The Gombe State Police Command has prosecuted 167 motorists and other road users for various traffic offences as part of its ongoing enforcement of Operation Velvet across the Gombe metropolis. The four-day exercise, which began at about 6:00 a.m. on Monday, August 24, 2026, and ended on Thursday, August 27, 2026, was supervised by the Commissioner of Police, Gombe State Command, CP Umar Chuso.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, the enforcement drive was conducted to improve compliance with traffic regulations and enhance safety within the Gombe metropolis. As part of the operation, three mobile courts were established at Rainbow Roundabout, Gombe Emir's Palace and Liji Roundabout to facilitate the speedy prosecution of traffic offenders arrested during the exercise.
Speaking during the enforcement drive, CP Chuso said the Command remained committed to ensuring compliance with traffic laws and regulations while promoting public order and safety across the state. "The Command is committed to ensuring strict compliance with traffic laws, maintaining public order and enhancing the safety and security of all road users across the state," he said.
The Commissioner further urged motorists, tricycle and motorcycle operators, as well as other road users, to comply with traffic regulations and ensure that their vehicles have all required documentation. He warned that the enforcement exercise would be sustained and called on members of the public to cooperate with security and enforcement officers.
The Command also advised residents to report suspicious or unlawful activities through the appropriate channels. This latest enforcement drive is part of the state police command's broader zero-tolerance policy against traffic violations, following similar exercises in July 2026 where 114 traffic offenders were prosecuted and 121 vehicles impounded.
