The Federal Government has awarded contracts for the rehabilitation of 13 police training institutions across the country. The announcement was made on Thursday, August 27, 2026, during the 160th meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC) at the State House, Abuja. Vice President Kashim Shettima chaired the meeting. Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa disclosed the development while briefing journalists after the meeting. He said 80 per cent of the contractors have already received their award letters. The rehabilitation work is expected to last three weeks. The goal is to get the institutions ready for training programmes by the Nigeria Police Force.
Governor Aiyedatiwa said the government is working to speed up the release of funds for the contractors to start work. He stressed that training is important for the police to handle the country's security challenges. "You are all aware that the insecurity in the country and our police force have to be trained further," he said. "Even though we are also looking at state policing, there is a minimum standard that has been set below which any of our police officers will not go." He added that the rehabilitation would cover infrastructure and equipment needed for effective training.
Enugu State Deputy Governor Ifeanyi Ossai also spoke after the meeting. He said the Minister of Finance had assured the council that funds for the contractors would be released next week. He said the government expects contractors to deliver the projects quickly. He also called on Nigerians to cooperate with the police and support efforts to improve security across the country.
At the NEC meeting, Vice President Shettima urged the council to keep pushing economic reforms until they create jobs and better living conditions for Nigerians. He said the government must follow through on its policies. "There is no doubt that a serious government is measured by the matters it refuses to abandon," he said. "While attention may reveal a problem, continuity determines whether the problem yields to policy." He stressed that macroeconomic progress must lead to jobs, purchasing power, and stronger subnational economies. "Continuity is a form of accountability: yesterday's promise still deserves a place on today's table, and no new priority absolves us of an old responsibility," he said. He added that President Bola Tinubu expects the NEC to turn policies into outcomes that Nigerians can see and feel.
The rehabilitation of the 13 police training institutions is part of the government's efforts to strengthen police capacity. The condition of training facilities has been seen as a key issue in producing better-prepared personnel for the force. This comes as the government continues discussions on state policing and the need to maintain minimum standards across the police force.
