A 26-year-old Ghanaian dental surgery assistant, identified as Doris Ampem, has been rescued in Nigeria after being lured with a fake promise of employment in Belgium, a plot that led to the arrest of two suspects by law enforcement agencies. Ampem, whose name was changed for the report, was just weeks away from completing her national service when she received the offer. The alleged trafficking operation began in Ghana and was orchestrated by a woman she trusted, Abigail Boateng, whom she described as her aunt and mentor.
Ampem met Boateng at church, and the woman encouraged her to study dental nursing, after which she enrolled at Kintampo College of Health. Boateng later told Ampem about an opportunity for nurses to travel to Belgium, and Ampem received an invite from Boateng's company, Nestor Global Limited. Ampem was told she would need about $3,000 (GH₵33,000) to facilitate the process. Her family struggled to raise the money, prompting Boateng to offer financial assistance. Ampem's mother eventually borrowed GH₵10,000 from a friend, which was paid as part of the required funds. She was later asked to provide another GH₵4,000 for an air ticket.
Ampem was told that her journey to Belgium would take her through Lagos and Cameroon. However, as the departure date approached, she became suspicious after hearing disturbing accounts about similar travel arrangements and after being instructed not to disclose the journey to anyone. Ampem informed her mother, and they sought assistance from Black Angels BI, an investigative organisation. On the day she was scheduled to travel, a GHOne News reporter accompanied Ampem from Accra to Lagos as part of the investigation. The trip ended at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, where a man identified as Emmanuel Owusu arrived to receive her. Investigators confronted and arrested him.
Ampem's cooperation contributed to the arrest of a second suspect in Nigeria. The case highlights the risks associated with fraudulent overseas job offers presented through trusted acquaintances and informal networks. The documentary also revealed that the arrangement was allegedly linked to a human trafficking network operating across Ghana and Nigeria.
