The Ekiti State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has firmly rejected a report claiming it is mobilising grassroots support for the presidential ambition of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde ahead of the 2027 general elections. The party also distanced itself from any collaboration with the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) on the matter.
In a statement issued in Ado Ekiti on Thursday, August 27, 2026, the Ekiti State PDP Chairman, Lanre Omolase, described the report as false, fabricated, and unauthorised. Omolase said the publication did not come from the recognised leadership of the party in Ekiti and was designed to create confusion about the party's political position.
"For the avoidance of doubt, the Ekiti State PDP, under my leadership, hereby distances itself completely from both the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and any purported presidential mobilisation project for Governor Seyi Makinde," Omolase said. He added that no such mobilisation had been authorised, inaugurated, or undertaken by the Ekiti State PDP leadership.
The chairman also launched a scathing personal attack on Governor Makinde, accusing him of betrayal. "Most importantly, Governor Seyi Makinde has never stopped to demonstrate treachery, and we in the PDP in Ekiti State will not have anything to do with such a character who is only stable in betrayal," Omolase stated.
The Ekiti PDP urged its members, supporters, and the public to ignore the report and reject any political statement made in the name of the party without approval from its recognised leadership. It also warned individuals and groups against using the party's name or structure to pursue personal political interests.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to internal discipline and due process, stressing that only authorised officials are empowered to speak on its behalf. It further advised media organisations and members of the public to verify information before attributing political positions to the PDP, especially on issues relating to the 2027 presidential election.
The denial comes amid reports that stakeholders of the PDP and APM in Ekiti had begun grassroots mobilisation in support of Makinde's presidential aspiration. The APM had earlier claimed that its alliance talks with opposition parties were yielding results and cited the Ekiti State chapter of the PDP for reaffirming its support for Makinde.
However, a faction of Ekiti PDP leaders has also publicly rejected Makinde's presidential bid, declaring support for President Bola Tinubu's re-election in 2027. The group, under the aegis of Concerned Ekiti PDP Members and Supporters, backed the party's 2026 governorship candidate, Dr. Wole Oluyede, over his decision to support Tinubu for a second term.
Governor Makinde had declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election on the platform of the APM in May 2026. He made the announcement at a joint mega-rally of the PDP and APM in Ibadan. The Ekiti PDP chairman's statement represents a strong rebuke of the governor's ambition and signals a clear division within the party's ranks in the state.
