At least three people have been killed, two others injured, and several buildings burnt to the ground following a violent clash in the Ikola area of Lagos State, sparked by a dispute over a ₦200 levy demanded from a commercial tricycle rider. The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident, which occurred on Thursday, August 27, 2026, and has since deployed a heavy security presence to restore order in the troubled community.
According to a statement by the command's Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, preliminary investigations revealed that trouble began when some suspected area boys stopped a tricycle rider and demanded ₦200 from him. The rider reportedly refused to pay the money, prompting the group to allegedly seize his tricycle. Unwilling to accept the loss, the rider returned to the area with some associates, leading to a violent confrontation between the two groups.
The clash quickly escalated into a full-blown fracas, resulting in the deaths of three persons. Two others sustained injuries of varying degrees. In the midst of the violence, some buildings were also reportedly set ablaze. The deceased and injured were subsequently evacuated to the Military Hospital in Yaba for medical attention and other procedures.
Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Olaiwola Fatai, accompanied by the Commander, 9 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Brig. Gen. Afolabi Owolabi, visited the scene to assess the situation and coordinate the security response. The police command said operatives from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Taskforce, Tactical Squad, Police Mobile Force (PMF), Eko Strike Force, and the Violent Crimes Response Unit (VCRU) have been deployed to the area. “The situation is firmly under control, and efforts are ongoing to prevent any further escalation,” the police said.
The command has commenced an investigation into the incident and vowed that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law. The police also urged residents to remain calm, refrain from spreading unverified information, and provide credible information to assist the ongoing investigation.
