Gunmen have abducted 15 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members who were returning from the Permanent Orientation Camp in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, on their way to Abuja. The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, along the Ofu/Itobe–Onicha-Igo axis in Ofu Local Government Area, Kogi State.
According to reports, the corps members were travelling in two buses when the attackers struck. A relative of one of the victims confirmed that his brother, Ayodele David, and 14 other corps members were among those taken. The driver of one of the buses was reportedly left behind with injuries. Passengers in another vehicle were largely allowed to leave, while four people from that bus were also taken.
A video purportedly from the scene shows gunmen shooting before abducting the victims. A police officer reportedly alerted relatives about the incident. The circumstances surrounding the incident and the whereabouts of the corps members remain under investigation.
The abduction has sparked outrage and fear among families of corps members and the wider public, as the NYSC programme continues to face security challenges across the country. As of the time of this report, no group has claimed responsibility for the abduction, and security agencies have yet to provide an official update on rescue efforts.
