The administration of Nigerian football is in a state of unprecedented upheaval. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has suspended all processes leading to its scheduled elective congress and removed the leadership of the country's major domestic leagues. This sweeping overhaul follows the dramatic resignations of the federation's top officials and a direct presidential order for comprehensive reform.
The crisis reached a tipping point on Thursday, August 27, 2026, when NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, and members of the Executive Committee resigned from their positions. Gusau's resignation came with just 34 days remaining on his four-year tenure, a move that followed a "groundswell of national disenchantment over recent dismal performances of the National Teams". The Super Eagles' failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Super Falcons' historic failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup had placed immense pressure on the federation's leadership.
In response to the leadership vacuum, the National Sports Commission (NSC) endorsed Dr. Emmanuel Ikpeme, the erstwhile Deputy General Secretary, to serve as interim General Secretary of the NFF. Dr. Ademola Olajire, the former Director of Media and Communications, has been appointed as interim Deputy General Secretary. The interim leadership is expected to maintain the federation's essential operations while a roadmap for proposed reforms is developed.
The shake-up extends far beyond the NFF secretariat. The NFF has directed the chairmen, appointed directors, and chief executive officers of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Nigeria National League (NNL), Nigeria Women Football League, and Nationwide League One to hand over administrative responsibilities to their Chief Operating Officers (COOs). This effectively places the administration of Nigeria's four major domestic league competitions under the direct oversight of the NFF Secretariat during the transition.
All processes initiated in preparation for the NFF Elective Congress scheduled for September 27, 2026, have been suspended. The federation stated that this suspension is not permanent, as a fresh electoral process will be launched after the completion of comprehensive reforms. These reforms are to be undertaken in consultation with world football's governing body, FIFA, and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The upheaval follows a directive from President Bola Tinubu, who ordered a "comprehensive reform" of Nigerian football to "overcome repeated failures to qualify for major regional, continental and world tournaments". The President directed the NSC chairman to work with the NFF secretariat to facilitate a broad, consultative reform process. He stressed the need to safeguard Nigeria's obligations under the international football framework. These interim measures are intended to ensure continuity in the administration of Nigerian football while consultations are held on the proposed reforms. Further changes and directives are expected to be communicated in due course.
