The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 28-year-old suspected drug dealer and recovered illicit substances valued at approximately N5.8 million in a swift intelligence-driven operation along the Nteje–Otuocha Road, the police said on Saturday, August 29, 2026. The suspect, identified as Chinedu Nwankwo, was apprehended in the early hours of the day by operatives of the command's Rapid Response Team during a patrol that was specifically targeted at intercepting drug shipments destined for criminal networks operating in the state.
According to a statement issued by the command's Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, a large quantity of substances believed to be Cannabis Sativa, Methamphetamine, and Colorado, commonly referred to as “Colos,” was recovered from the suspect. The drugs, with an estimated street value of N5.8 million, were being transported for delivery to suspected criminal elements in Otuocha, Anyamelium, Nzam, Umuleri, and Aguleri. Preliminary investigations suggested that the consignment was meant to supply criminal groups operating in those communities, raising concerns about the role of narcotics in fuelling violence and other forms of crime across the state.
“The suspect was arrested in the early hours of today, 29th August 2026, by operatives of the Rapid Response Team during an intelligence-driven patrol operation along the Nteje–Otuocha Road,” Ikenga said. “Preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect was allegedly conveying the illicit substances to Otuocha, Anyamelium, Nzam, Umuleri, and Aguleri areas for delivery to suspected criminal elements.” He added that police investigators were also examining the alleged connection between the recovered consignments and activities capable of disrupting the ongoing Local Government Council elections in the state, a move that underscores the police's determination to prevent drug-related violence from undermining the electoral process.
The arrest comes at a critical time when Anambra State is conducting local government elections, and authorities have been on high alert for any activities that could threaten public safety and the integrity of the polls. The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, commended the operatives for their vigilance and sustained patrols, particularly during the election period. He noted that illicit drugs remain among the factors that can fuel criminality, as drug trafficking and abuse may provide resources and embolden individuals involved in violent and other forms of crime.

The suspect and the recovered exhibits are currently in police custody, while investigation is ongoing to establish the full extent of his activities and identify other persons who may be connected to the alleged drug distribution network. The police have assured residents that they would continue to prioritise public safety and take necessary measures to protect the integrity of the electoral process across Anambra State.
