A significant political realignment has taken place in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, as approximately 5,000 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and declared their support for former Inspector-General of Police, retired Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The defectors made their decision public on Friday, August 28, 2026, during a political mobilisation programme held in Karu. The event was attended by Hajiya Rukayya Muhammad Abubakar Adamu, Kwalliyar Lafia, alongside the Director-General of the campaign council, Hon. Abdullahi Yanmani, and other members of the campaign team.
The new SDP members pledged their 100 per cent support for Adamu, expressing confidence in his leadership capacity and ability to provide effective governance if elected governor of Nasarawa State. They also promised to mobilise additional supporters across Karu and other parts of the state in preparation for the 2027 election.
The development comes amid increasing political activities and realignments among major political parties in Nasarawa State as politicians and supporters position themselves ahead of the 2027 governorship contest. Adamu, who served as Inspector-General of Police from 2019 to 2021, has been positioning himself as a formidable contender for the governorship seat, leveraging his national profile and security credentials.
The defection of 5,000 APC members represents a significant blow to the ruling party in Karu LGA, which has traditionally been a stronghold for the APC. The mass defection suggests growing dissatisfaction among party members and could signal a broader shift in political allegiances as the 2027 elections approach.
Efforts to reach the APC leadership in Nasarawa State for comment were unsuccessful as of the time of this report. However, political analysts have noted that the defection could have implications for the party's electoral fortunes in the state, particularly in Karu and surrounding areas where the SDP is seeking to expand its influence.
