A wave of terror swept through Chiromawa town in Garun Malam Local Government Area of Kano State on Saturday night, August 29, 2026, as armed bandits stormed the community, killing three people, injuring five others, and abducting the state's 86-year-old farmers' leader, Alhaji Yusuf Nadabo Chiromawa.
The attackers, who struck at about 10:00 p.m., reportedly opened fire on residents, throwing the community into panic. According to the Chairman of Garun Malam Local Government Area, Alhaji Aminu Salisu Kadawa, the gunmen invaded the community at about 11 p.m. and specifically targeted Nadabo's residence. The attackers killed three young men and injured five others. The injured victims are currently receiving treatment in hospital.
The assailants successfully abducted Alhaji Yusuf Nadabo Chiromawa, who holds the traditional title of Sarkin Noman Kano, the leader of farmers in the state. Nadabo is also the owner of Chiromawa Petroleum Station. The abduction of the 86-year-old community leader sent shockwaves through the community, raising concerns about the ability of armed groups to penetrate communities and carry out attacks with impunity.
However, in a significant relief for the community, Nadabo was rescued on Sunday morning through the combined efforts of soldiers and local vigilantes. The Chairman of Garun Malam LGA also confirmed the incident and said security personnel have been deployed to track down the attackers and ensure the safety of the rescued traditional leader.
While the rescue has brought some relief, the attack has left a community in mourning. Three families have lost their loved ones, and five others are nursing injuries. The incident has also raised troubling questions about how the bandits managed to storm the community, carry out the attack, and escape despite the presence of security personnel. The attack on Chiromawa is not the first time Nadabo has been targeted. About five years ago, suspected kidnappers reportedly stormed his office at his filling station in Bakin Tasha area of Chiromawa and shot sporadically into the air before fleeing. As of the time of this report, the Kano State Police Command and other relevant authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the attack. However, the Chairman of Garun Malam LGA has urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could assist in apprehending the attackers.
