The body of Ogbeni Goggo, a 40-year-old businessman from Delta State, was found lifeless around the Ebrumede Flyover Roundabout in Uvwie Local Government Area on Thursday, August 27, 2026. He had ingested Sniper, a poisonous substance, a day earlier. His wife identified his remains at the police station on Friday after reporting him missing.
Goggo had been struggling with severe financial pressure. According to reports from multiple news outlets, including The Whistler and Tarakirivoice, he had taken a ₦1.8 million loan to finance a business venture. The business failed. The burden of the debt, coupled with the pressure of being married for three years without a child, reportedly pushed him into depression.
On the night of Wednesday, August 26, Goggo sent messages to friends and family. He told them he was tired of life and had decided to end it. When he did not return home, his wife grew worried. She spent Thursday searching for him. On Friday morning, she went to the Ebrumede Police Station to report him missing. There, officers showed her a photograph of a man found dead near the roundabout. She identified the body as her husband’s and collapsed.
Witnesses at the scene said they saw Goggo ingest the poison. He collapsed and began convulsing. They raised an alarm and tried to help by administering oil, but their efforts failed. The police were alerted and evacuated his remains to a mortuary in Agbarho.
Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident but said the motive could not be established. However, sources close to the family told journalists that the failed business, mounting debt, and depression were the driving factors.
Human rights activist Israel Joe, who spoke on the incident, expressed sadness and urged others facing similar challenges to seek help. He warned that no amount of money was worth taking one's life. His death has left his wife devastated, with sources saying she collapsed upon identifying his body.
The tragedy has once again highlighted the devastating effects of financial distress and depression on Nigerians.
