Five of the six residents abducted from Rukpete Village in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State have regained their freedom, while one victim died in captivity. The victims were abducted during a late-night attack on Rukpete, in the Lafiagi Emirate, on Monday, June 8, 2026.
According to a community source, bandits invaded the community at about 11:00 p.m. and initially abducted seven residents. The source said one elderly victim was later released, leaving six victims—four men and two women—in the custody of the attackers. Earlier reports indicated that some of those abducted were children under the age of 14, heightening concerns over the safety of the victims.
Source gathered that five of the six remaining victims have now regained their freedom. However, the development was overshadowed by tragedy as one of the victims reportedly died while in captivity. The circumstances surrounding the victim's death were not immediately clear as of the time of filing this report.
The incident has further heightened concerns over the worsening security situation in rural communities across Edu and other parts of Kwara North, where residents, particularly farmers, continue to face the threat of kidnapping and banditry. Residents have renewed calls on the government and security agencies to intensify security operations in vulnerable communities and take decisive steps to prevent further attacks and protect lives and property.
