The Nigerian Army has sustained its offensive momentum in Niger State, recording significant successes against armed bandits in a series of coordinated operations that have dealt a heavy blow to criminal networks terrorising communities across the North-Central region. In a fierce clash along the Ashuwa–Alala axis, troops of the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, overwhelmed bandit fighters, neutralising several of them and forcing others to flee with gunshot wounds. The operation, which occurred two days ago, marked a critical victory in the military's ongoing campaign to dismantle bandit enclaves and restore confidence in communities long plagued by criminal violence.
The success was not an isolated incident. Last night, troops struck again around the A’ure–Kuimo axis in Mariga Local Government Area, delivering another heavy blow to terrorist elements operating in the region. This latest offensive forms part of a broader strategy to sustain military pressure on criminal groups that have reportedly migrated from the Ibbi–Zugurma axis of Kainji National Park. The criminals, who had been moving with previously kidnapped victims, attacked civilians along their escape routes, killing some and abducting others. However, troops from the Warari and Gulbin Boka Forward Operating Bases launched coordinated assaults that overwhelmed the bandits, leading to the rescue of numerous men, women, and children held in captivity.
The full extent of the gains from the latest operations is still being assessed, as some of the bandits reportedly fled the area. However, preliminary reports indicate that the offensive has significantly degraded the ability of criminal elements to regroup or stage fresh attacks. The Defence Headquarters confirmed that over 324 terrorists and criminals were neutralised across all theatres in August, with 373 suspects arrested and 610 kidnap victims rescued. In Niger State alone, air strikes conducted as part of Operation FANSAN YAMMA killed over 164 terrorists and destroyed more than 300 motorcycles. The Air Component also conducted precision strikes on identified terrorist concentrations, neutralising scores of fighters and disrupting their logistics and equipment.
The military's sustained offensive has been hailed as a testament to the bravery and professionalism of the troops, who remain resolute in their commitment to restoring peace to troubled communities. Security authorities have urged residents to continue cooperating with the military by providing credible intelligence, stressing that sustained collaboration is key to achieving lasting peace and stability. As troops maintain operational pressure, communities once gripped by fear are beginning to breathe a cautious sigh of relief.
