The Joint Union of Gombe State Tertiary Institutions (JOUGTIN) commenced a two‑week warning strike on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, after the state government failed to implement outstanding staff welfare entitlements. The industrial action began at midnight and affects all public tertiary institutions across the state, including the College of Education, Billiri; Gombe State Polytechnic, Bajoga; College of Health Science and Technology, Kaltungo; and the College of Education and Legal Studies, Nafada.
The union, which comprises academic and non‑academic staff unions, had issued a 14‑day ultimatum on August 17, 2026, demanding action on arrears from the 2019 N30,000 minimum wage, 25% and 35% wage awards, non‑implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage, and outstanding Earned Academic Allowances. When the ultimatum expired on Monday, August 31, without “tangible, concrete and satisfactory feedback” from the government, the unions declared the warning strike.
In a communiqué issued after a joint meeting on September 1, JOUGTIN stated that the strike would run for 14 days and warned that failure to address the issues within that period would trigger an indefinite strike without further notice. The unions said they remained open to negotiations and urged the government to intervene urgently in the interest of industrial peace and the future of tertiary education in the state.
The strike comes despite the state government’s recent approval of an additional N148.76 million monthly subvention for Gombe State University to support the enhanced salary structure, effective October 2026. However, the unions said the intervention did not cover the broader demands of the polytechnics and colleges of education.
