Suspected bandits launched an attack on Gidan Gambo village in Jargaba Ward, Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State, on the night of Saturday, September 5, 2026, but were met with fierce resistance from community members who fought back until troops arrived.

According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, who posted on X on Sunday, September 6, 2026, the attackers stormed the village in the middle of the night but were surprised by the determination of the residents. The community members, armed with whatever they could find, held their ground until troops of the 17 Brigade stationed in Bakori arrived at the scene. The troops engaged the bandits and forced them to retreat.

Tragically, one resident lost his life during the attack, while another sustained injuries. The names of the victims have not yet been released. The courage shown by the community in the face of the bandits' assault has been widely praised. Residents refused to flee or surrender, standing firm and repelling the attackers until security forces arrived.

The quick response of the 17 Brigade troops was also commended. Their timely intervention prevented the attack from escalating further and likely saved many more lives. The incident highlights the importance of community vigilance, early warning systems, and cooperation with security forces in tackling the menace of banditry in Katsina State and the wider North-West region.

This attack follows a similar incident in Batsari Local Government Area of Katsina State, where repentant bandits had recently attended the coronation of a new traditional ruler, indicating a complex and evolving security situation in the region. The Gidan Gambo attack serves as a stark reminder that banditry remains a persistent threat, and communities must remain on high alert.

Residents of Gidan Gambo and surrounding villages have been urged to report any suspicious movements to security agencies and to maintain the spirit of vigilance and cooperation that helped thwart this attack. The Nigerian security forces have also vowed to intensify operations against bandit groups operating in Katsina State and to ensure that communities are protected from further attacks.
