Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has suspended the Executive Secretary of the State Post-Primary Schools Management Board (PPSMB), Birsan Penuel, over alleged irregularities in the discharge of his official duties. The suspension, which took immediate effect, was announced on Sunday, September 6, 2026, by the Governor's Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, and is intended to allow for a thorough investigation into the allegations against Penuel.
The PPSMB is the supervising authority for senior secondary education in Adamawa State. In the interim, the most senior director on the board has been directed to take over the affairs of the agency to ensure the uninterrupted continuation of its activities.
Governor Fintiri, in a statement, reaffirmed his administration's commitment to "sanitising and repositioning the education sector" for improved service delivery. He warned all political appointees and public officers to uphold due process, transparency, and accountability. "I will not look back in taking the necessary steps, no matter how tough, to protect the integrity of the system and ensure that our children receive the quality education they deserve," the governor declared.
The governor highlighted the measures his administration has put in place over the last seven years, including the recruitment of qualified teachers, rehabilitation and construction of classrooms, provision of instructional materials, and regular payment of salaries and allowances. He vowed to deal decisively with any act that undermines the progress made in the education sector.
Penuel's suspension comes amid a data capture exercise for 5,000 newly recruited teachers across the state's 21 local government areas, a process that could be impacted by the leadership change at the board. The outcome of the investigation into the allegations against Penuel is expected to determine the government's next course of action.
