A 54-year-old officer of the Nigeria Customs Service, Prince Etteng Ise, has died in a lone motor accident along the Ikom–Calabar Highway in Cross River State. The crash occurred at about 2:56 p.m. on Monday, September 7, 2026, near Alesi Village in Ikom Local Government Area, according to a statement by the Cross River State Police Command.
Ise, who was serving at the Mfum Border in Etung Local Government Area, reportedly lost control of his vehicle while attempting to avoid a pothole on the highway. The vehicle veered off the road into the bush and collided with a tree. Residents who responded to the crash rushed the injured officer to Holy Family Hospital in Ikom, where a medical doctor confirmed him dead. His remains were subsequently deposited at the hospital mortuary.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Calabar on Monday. The command commiserated with the deceased's family, colleagues, and the Nigeria Customs Service over the tragic loss. It also urged motorists to exercise caution, avoid excessive speed, and remain vigilant while driving, particularly on highways. The police further appealed to road users to pay attention to road conditions and take necessary precautions to prevent avoidable crashes.
The death of Prince Etteng Ise adds to growing concerns over road safety on the Ikom-Calabar Highway, where poor road conditions, particularly potholes, have become a recurring hazard for motorists. The incident has once again highlighted the dangers posed by neglected highways and the urgent need for government intervention to repair critical roads and save lives. As the Customs Service and the deceased's family mourn his passing, the tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the human cost of Nigeria's deteriorating road infrastructure.
