A popular Kano political commentator and government critic, Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, 54, was found dead in a pool of blood at his residence in Gaida, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State, in the early hours of Wednesday, September 9, 2026. The killing has sent shockwaves through the state's political and media landscape, sparking widespread condemnation and urgent calls for a thorough investigation from human rights organisations and political leaders alike. According to family members, the deceased was attacked by yet-to-be-identified men who broke into his house and slaughtered him. His elder sister, Aisha Muhammad Lawal, told reporters that her son received a call around 12:30 a.m. informing him of the incident. "Some yet-to-be-identified men broke into his house and slaughtered him," she said. "When he got there, he already met policemen at the scene. They rushed him to hospital, carried out some investigations, and later handed over the corpse to us around 2:30 a.m." She added that two people had been arrested from the area, and that Dan Shagamu left behind a wife and six children.
Amnesty International Nigeria condemned the killing in the strongest terms, describing it as the brutal slaughter of a man who was overpowered by his killers. The rights organisation called on Nigerian authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure that those suspected of responsibility are brought to justice. "In a democracy, critics are listened to, not killed," the organisation declared. Amnesty also expressed serious concern that the Nigerian government is doing very little to prevent widespread political violence, including killings, threats, intimidation, and other serious human rights violations as the 2027 general elections approach. "As the elections approach, we continue to receive disturbing reports of politically related threats to life and intimidation," the organisation added.
The tragedy carries an even darker dimension. Daily Trust gathered that Dan Shagamu had previously raised an alarm over death threats to his life. In a recent video posted on his social media page, he appealed directly to the Kano State Governor, the Emir of Kano, and the police for protection, saying he had been repeatedly harassed by neighbours and their children. He narrated incidents of children pelting him with stones, damaging his television, and surrounding his house to insult him. He reported the matter to the Gaida village head, who escalated it to the Ja'en village head, but said the issue was beyond their power. "They are after me, and they are our neighbours' children. The neighbours are aware but have conspired. I am asking for help, please," he pleaded in the video. His family said they were not suspecting anyone in particular, but insisted that justice must be done. "We are calling on the government to help us ensure that justice is served," his sister said.
Former Kano State Governor and Vice Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, raised the alarm in a post on X on Tuesday, confirming that Dan Shagamu's body was found in a pool of blood at his home. "I am deeply disturbed by the killing of the renowned social media political commentator Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, whose body was found today in a pool of his blood at his home in Kano. Dan Shagamu was brutally slaughtered in a horrific attack," Kwankwaso said. He urged the Kano State Government to constitute an investigative panel to probe the incident and bring those responsible to justice. He then issued a stern ultimatum: "Should the authorities fail to take decisive and transparent action, the incoming NDC Government will, upon assumption of office, launch a full investigation and take all necessary steps to hold those responsible accountable." Kwankwaso also called on both state and federal governments to protect opposition voices from threats and attacks, stressing that freedom of expression was guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution.
Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf also condemned the attack, describing it as barbaric and unacceptable. The governor directed security agencies, particularly the Kano State Commands of the DSS and the Nigeria Police, to intensify efforts to identify, arrest, and prosecute the perpetrators, stressing that no individual or group would be allowed to take the law into their own hands. He extended his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and associates of the deceased, urging the people of Kano State to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands. The Kano State Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Husaini Mai Riga, also described the killing as deeply disturbing and unacceptable, calling on the government and security agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the killing, identify those responsible, and ensure their prosecution in accordance with the law.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kano State Police Command had not confirmed the critic's death. Dan Shagamu, who operated under the brand Dan Shagamu International, was known for his social media videos and commentary on political, religious, and community issues. His Facebook cover had his picture with Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, and he had posted videos attacking the Tinubu-led federal government while promoting Atiku Abubakar as incoming President. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, but the killing has prompted calls for an immediate investigation by the authorities, with many residents calling for stronger measures to protect citizens from violent attacks. For his family, friends, and followers, the brutal end to a life defined by outspoken commentary is a tragic reminder of the dangers faced by those who dare to speak truth to power in Nigeria.
