The distress call came in from Unguwan Lalle, a community in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State. Terrorists had stormed the area on September 13, 2026, and taken two people hostage. Troops of Sector 2, operating under the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, responded immediately. What followed was a fierce engagement that forced the terrorists to abandon their captives and flee. The two kidnapped victims were rescued in the process, according to a statement issued by the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja.
The troops did not stop there. Intelligence soon indicated that the terrorists were attempting to regroup nearby. The soldiers mobilised swiftly, re-established contact, and engaged the criminals in a second gun battle. Once again, the terrorists were forced to withdraw. During a subsequent search of the area, the troops recovered 157 rounds of PKT ammunition, phone batteries, and other items abandoned by the fleeing fighters. The recovery of such a large quantity of ammunition is a significant blow to the terrorists' operational capacity, denying them the resources they need to carry out future attacks.
The operation in Sokoto was part of a broader series of actions conducted by Operation FANSAN YAMMA between September 12 and 13. In a separate operation in Kaduna State, troops of Sector 1 arrested a suspected illicit drug peddler, Yohana Musa, during a stop-and-search operation along the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari Road. Musa was allegedly found with a large quantity of drugs and other substances while travelling towards Birnin Gwari. He remains in military custody for further investigation.
The Theatre Commander of Operation FANSAN YAMMA commended the troops for their gallantry and professionalism. He reaffirmed the command's commitment to denying terrorists and other criminal elements freedom of action across the North-West. The Joint Task Force also urged members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies. Community cooperation, the command said, remains critical to tracking criminal elements, preventing attacks, and restoring lasting peace across the region. For the people of Unguwan Lalle, the rescue of two of their own is a reminder that the fight is far from over, but also a sign that the troops are not backing down.
