The Bayelsa State Police Command has disbursed cheques totalling N2,483,354.01 to the families of officers who lost their lives in the line of duty and to personnel who sustained injuries while serving the state, in a ceremony that mixed grief with gratitude and a renewed pledge of institutional loyalty to those who bear the physical and emotional scars of policing.
The Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command, CP Ajao Adewale, presented the cheques on Tuesday on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, under the Group Life Assurance, Group Personal Accident and IGP Family Welfare Schemes. The Police Public Relations Officer for the Bayelsa State Command, DSP Musa Mohammed, disclosed the disbursement in a statement issued on Wednesday on behalf of the Commissioner. According to the statement, the beneficiaries included families of officers who died while performing their constitutional duties, as well as serving personnel who sustained various injuries in the course of service. The disbursement also covered outstanding balances recovered from insurance companies following earlier partial settlements, meaning some of the payments represented long-overdue entitlements that had been trapped in bureaucratic and insurance bottlenecks for months or even years.
Speaking during the presentation, Adewale framed the exercise as far more than a routine financial transaction. He described it as a concrete indication of the commitment of the Inspector-General of Police and the Nigeria Police Force to the welfare of personnel and the families of officers who died in service. "An injury to one is an injury to all," the Commissioner said, assuring the injured officers and bereaved families that they were not alone in their pain or their struggle. He acknowledged that no amount of money could replace a lost loved one or erase the pain arising from a serious injury sustained in the line of duty. But he insisted the payment would provide practical assistance to affected families and personnel, and would reaffirm that the sacrifices and contributions of police officers are recognised and valued by the Force.
The Commissioner urged police personnel in the state to remain committed to their constitutional responsibilities, noting that welfare interventions of this kind were designed not only to support affected officers and families but also to boost the morale of serving personnel who confront danger daily. He said the Bayelsa State Police Command would continue to support initiatives aimed at addressing the welfare needs of officers and families affected by the risks and demands of police service.
The ceremony in Yenagoa is the latest in a series of welfare disbursements that have become a defining feature of the current leadership of the Nigeria Police Force under IGP Olatunji Disu. In September, the Inspector-General presented insurance and welfare benefits totalling N2.317 billion to 2,971 beneficiaries and next-of-kin of police officers who died in active service, covering insurance policy years from 2017/2018 through 2024/2025. That presentation, held in Abuja, included outstanding balances recovered from insurance companies following earlier partial settlements, as well as claims that had remained unpaid for years. The IGP said at the time that the exercise was not merely about presenting cheques but about honouring the memory of officers who lost their lives in the line of duty and reaffirming the Force's commitment to their families. He recalled the recent loss of personnel in various operations across the country, including officers attacked in Yobe State, members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit killed in Zamfara State during a rescue mission, and ten personnel ambushed and killed during an operation in Kebbi State. "The Nigeria Police Force will not abandon the families of those who paid the supreme price in our service," Disu said.
Earlier in March, the IGP had presented N2.4 billion in cheques to 1,075 beneficiaries and next-of-kin of deceased police officers under the same Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Schemes, covering policy years from 2018 to 2026 and including previously outstanding insurance claims. The head of the Force Insurance Unit, ACP Lydia Amen, commended the IGP for what she described as people-centred leadership and commitment to personnel welfare, saying the payments reflected efforts to pursue outstanding insurance claims and fulfil obligations to families of deceased personnel. The unit pledged to continue strengthening the police insurance system, improving claims administration, pursuing outstanding obligations and protecting the interests of serving personnel and their families.
The Bayelsa disbursement also follows a pattern of similar welfare interventions by the state command. In April, the Command concluded activities marking National Police Day 2026 with the disbursement of cheques totalling N16,182,679.26 to the families of deceased police officers. That presentation was made by CP Iyamah Daniel Edebor, who then headed the command, on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police. In May 2023, the Bayelsa State Police Command presented cheques worth N31,787,729 to the next of kin of deceased police officers in the state under the Police Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Scheme. And in July 2019, the then Commissioner of Police, Mr Ben Okolo, presented N24 million to families of eight personnel of the command who died in active service, explaining that the money was part of the Group Life Insurance Welfare scheme of the police.
These recurring disbursements underscore a broader and more troubling reality: Nigerian police officers continue to pay a heavy price in the line of duty, and the welfare of their families often depends on the willingness of successive police administrations to pursue insurance claims that are frequently delayed, disputed or partially settled. The Group Life Assurance Scheme, the Group Personal Accident Scheme and the IGP Family Welfare Scheme exist precisely to provide a financial safety net for officers and their dependants. Yet the fact that so many payments represent recovered outstanding balances and previously unpaid claims suggests that the system has historically failed to deliver timely relief to grieving families and wounded officers.
At the federal level, the government has signalled an intention to reform police welfare more broadly. In August, the Ministerial and Stakeholders Committee on the Review of the Nigeria Police Force Salary Structure, Welfare Package and Settlement of Outstanding Benefits met in Abuja and reaffirmed the Federal Government's commitment to improving the welfare of police personnel through a comprehensive review of the salary structure, allowances, insurance, pension-related benefits and other welfare packages. The committee examined outstanding pension arrears, death benefits, Group Life Insurance liabilities, Group Personal Accident claims and other welfare obligations requiring government intervention. It identified inadequate accommodation as one of the major welfare challenges confronting police personnel and stressed the need for a more realistic housing support framework. The committee also called for innovative and sustainable funding mechanisms to complement annual budgetary provisions and guarantee effective implementation of approved welfare programmes.
For the families who received cheques in Yenagoa this week, the payments represent a measure of justice, however imperfect. For the injured officers, they represent recognition of sacrifices that often go unseen. And for the Nigeria Police Force, the disbursement represents a test of whether its welfare promises can be sustained beyond individual leadership tenures and translated into a system that reliably supports those who put their lives on the line for the safety of others.
