A football game on a vacant plot beside the Methodist Church Nigeria in the Fiwasaye area of Osogbo, Osun State, descended into violence on Sunday, September 20, 2026, when a group of youths allegedly attacked the church premises after a ball broke one of its windows. The Osun State Police Command confirmed the arrest of five suspects at the scene, identifying them as Tajudeen Hassan, Adewale Yusuf, Kabiru Abdulsalam, Olanrewaju Abiodun, and a female, Adewale Mujidat.
According to a statement signed by the Command's Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, the incident occurred at about 10:40 a.m. when the Command received a distress call from a complainant at the church. The youths, who had been playing football on the fallow land beside the church, kicked the ball across into the church premises, shattering a louvre glass window. Rather than showing remorse or offering to repair the damage, the youths allegedly resorted to throwing stones into the church compound. The barrage of stones caused further damage to additional louvre windows and shattered the rear glass screen of a Mitsubishi vehicle belonging to one of the church members.
Operatives from the Iludun Police Division responded swiftly to the distress call and apprehended the five suspects at the scene. A red Yamaha motorcycle with registration number LRG 143 QE was also recovered from the scene. The Commissioner of Police, Osun State Command, CP Ibrahim Zungura, has directed that the investigation be conducted professionally and in accordance with the law. He urged members of the public, particularly youths, to exercise restraint and avoid actions capable of escalating minor disagreements into acts of violence or destruction of property. The Command assured that appropriate legal action would be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.
The incident comes against the backdrop of heightened security concerns in Osun State. The police had earlier issued a warning against a planned protest allegedly linked to a group calling itself the "Congress of Cultists," which intelligence sources have associated with the Neo-Black Movement, also known as Black Axe. The Command described the group as faceless and warned that anyone planning to disrupt public peace or engage in criminal activities would face the full weight of the law. The arrest of the five suspects in Fiwasaye is a reminder of how quickly ordinary disputes can spiral into criminality when tempers flare unchecked. The church, a place of worship and sanctuary, became the target of an attack triggered by something as mundane as a football crossing a boundary. The suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue.
