The decomposing body of an unidentified young woman has been recovered from a stream in Ogoda community, Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State, in a case that has been linked to alleged ritual killing, with two suspects now in police custody.
The victim, whose identity has not been established, was allegedly abducted from Ahoada Minta in the neighbouring Ahoada East Local Government Area before being taken to Ogoda and killed. According to the Paramount Ruler of Ogoda, Chief Obutu Tom, the woman’s breasts, private parts and heart were removed before her remains were dumped in the stream. “Some boys, about five in number, conspired, abducted a girl from Ahoada East to Ogoda community, after which the girl was killed,” the monarch said. “They removed her breast, removed her private part, collected her heart, then went and dropped her in a stream very close to the village.”
Chief Tom said he first received information about the incident on September 12, 2026, while he was in Port Harcourt, the state capital. He returned to the community, conducted a preliminary inquiry and immediately reported the matter to the police. The recovery of the body took several days of coordination involving community leaders, police operatives and officials of both local government areas. On September 19, a joint team led by the Chairman of Ahoada West Local Government Area, Eugene Epelle, entered the swamp and recovered the corpse floating on the water. The team included the Divisional Police Officer, the Joint Task Force Commander and other security chiefs in the area.
Epelle condemned the killing in strong terms and vowed that those responsible would face justice. “I will make sure we get to the root of this matter. Anyone involved will go in for it. This matter will not end in just investigation. It will go to court for this lady to get justice,” he said. The council chairman confirmed that two young men had been arrested in connection with the incident and were being investigated. “We mobilised and were able to arrest two young men who are being investigated, based on information linking them to the death of this young lady,” he said. Epelle described the incident as the first of its kind since he assumed office, stressing that the council would not treat the matter lightly. He also reassured residents of their safety, saying security remained his top priority.
The spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Blessing Agabe, confirmed the incident and said an investigation was ongoing. “Although we are yet to find the identity of the woman, investigation is ongoing to ascertain her identity and apprehend those behind the act,” she said. The remains of the woman have been deposited at a mortuary. The police have not disclosed whether the suspects are among the five individuals alleged to have carried out the abduction and killing, and no charges have been filed as of Monday.
The incident has triggered panic in Ogoda and surrounding communities. Chief Tom said residents were now living in fear and appealed to law enforcement agencies to intensify their presence in the area. “I cannot allow such a thing to happen in my area. I had to do the needful; so I went to the police and gave my report to them,” he said.
The killing has revived concerns about ritual murder and kidnapping in Rivers State, where security agencies have recorded a series of abductions and killings in recent months. In January 2026, the police arrested a suspect, Goodness Iberi, in connection with the kidnapping and murder of 25-year-old Rita Special Eleonu, whose decomposing body was recovered from a forest in Emohua Local Government Area after a ransom was reportedly paid. The suspect led operatives to the location where the remains were found. In August 2026, the Rivers State Police Command arrested a suspected armed robber and recovered stolen motorcycles in Calabar, while the Cross River and Akwa Ibom commands intercepted containers of contraband goods. The pattern of violence has raised questions about the effectiveness of security arrangements in the state, particularly in rural communities where police presence is limited.
The Ahoada area has also been a flashpoint for cult-related violence and kidnapping. In September 2026, the Nigeria Democratic Congress accused the All Progressives Congress and the Benue State Government of sending thugs to disrupt Peter Obi’s convoy on the Makurdi–Gboko highway, an allegation the state government denied. In Osun State, the killing of an Accord Party chieftain at a motor park intensified a long-running dispute over the leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers. These incidents form part of a broader climate of political and criminal violence that has unsettled communities across the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.
For the family of the unidentified woman, the recovery of her body has brought a measure of closure but not the answers they deserve. The circumstances surrounding her abduction and killing remain unclear, and the identities of all those responsible have not been established. The two suspects in police custody are presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction. The police have urged members of the public to report suspicious movements and activities, stressing that timely information remains critical to preventing crime and apprehending offenders.
The Chairman of Ahoada West has pledged to follow the case through to prosecution. “We believe in justice. This matter will not end with investigation alone; it will go to court. We will fight for justice for this young lady,” Epelle said. For now, the investigation continues, and the community waits to see whether the arrests will lead to the full accountability that the traditional ruler and the council chairman have demanded. The killing has cast a shadow over Ogoda, a rural agrarian community on the outskirts of Akinima, and it has reinforced the fear that has taken hold in the area since the woman’s decomposing body was pulled from the stream.
