Afolabi Kazeem Michael, the Lagos socialite and businessman popularly known as KC Luxury, will be arraigned today, Friday, September 25, 2026, at the Federal High Court in Lagos over his alleged involvement in the trafficking of 184.5 kilogrammes of cocaine, bringing to a head a case that has gripped the nation since his dramatic arrest at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport more than six weeks ago.
The 49-year-old, who presented himself online to his 700,000 Instagram followers as a dealer in gold and luxury goods, was arrested on August 13, 2026, at the departure hall of the airport while attempting to board a business-class flight to Paris, France. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency said his arrest followed the interception of 184.5kg of cocaine concealed in brown boxes at a courier facility in Lagos on August 3, 2026. The agency described the seizure as the largest cocaine bust from a courier company in its history and valued the consignment at approximately N39 billion.
The NDLEA has since filed a 22-count amended charge against KC Luxury and two other defendants, Boniface Freeman Ochoche Sule and Ikechukwu Ekugo Patriarch, over alleged conspiracy, trafficking and money laundering. The charge, marked FHC/LAG/CR/755/2026, also names two other persons identified as Atandare and Latifat Yusuf. The agency alleges that KC Luxury was the Nigerian arrowhead of an international cartel that used Nigeria as a transit hub for moving cocaine from South America to the United Kingdom, other parts of Europe and Asia.
According to the NDLEA, KC Luxury was found in possession of €7,750, £2,800, N100,000 in cash and expensive jewellery at the time of his arrest, which the agency described as consistent with the proceeds of illicit trade. A subsequent search of his luxury apartment on Banana Island, Ikoyi, led to the recovery of exotic vehicles. The agency also arrested Lawal Mujab Kehinde, a staff member of the logistics firm through which the cocaine was processed, who was allegedly paid in cash to package and route consignments for the syndicate.
The road to today's arraignment has been fraught with legal battles. On August 20, Justice Akintayo Aluko granted the NDLEA a 30-day extension of KC Luxury's detention to allow further investigation. On August 27, Justice Friday Ogazi ordered the agency to produce him in court after he had been held for 14 days without being formally charged or arraigned. KC Luxury, through his lawyer, Abdulakeem Labi-Lawal (SAN), filed a fundamental rights application challenging the detention order, arguing that the court lacked jurisdiction to extend his detention and that the order violated his constitutional right to personal liberty. On September 17, Justice Aluko dismissed the application, holding that the detention extension was properly issued and backed by the Constitution and relevant drug-control laws.
The case has drawn attention to the growing sophistication of international drug trafficking networks operating through Nigeria. The NDLEA said the cartel used false identities to conceal the true consignor of its shipments and relied on financial facilitators who moved billions of naira on its behalf. The agency also said it maintained active criminal contacts in the United Kingdom, some of whom have since been arrested by British authorities in connection with the same syndicate. The NDLEA Chairman, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), described the operation as one of the most significant narcotics investigations undertaken by the agency in recent times, vowing that the agency would "track you to the departure gates if we must."
KC Luxury's arraignment today marks the formal commencement of his trial. The 22-count charge lays out the prosecution's case in detail, and the coming weeks will see the NDLEA present its evidence against a man accused of running a criminal enterprise from behind the glamorous facade of a luxury goods influencer. For the agency, the case is a test of its capacity to dismantle transnational cartels. For KC Luxury, it is the beginning of a legal battle that could define the rest of his life.
